Effect of Planting Techniques and Variety on the Growth, Yield and Labor Utilization for Irrigated Rice Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the West Byde of BRRI farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur in Boro season, 1999 to observe the effect of planting techniques and variety on the growth, yield and labour utilization for irrigated rice cultivation. The experiment comprised of three planting techniques viz., i) sowing dry seeds in the puddle plots, ii) sowing peregrinated seeds in the puddle plots, and iii) transplanting seedlings in the puddle plots, and Two varieties viz., i) BRRI dhan28 and ii) BRRI dhan29. Results revealed that yield was higher (6.00t/ha) in BRRI dhan29 with transplanting method which followed by BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan28 with sowing dry seeded plots respectively. Almost a reverse was observed for straw production. On the other hand, labor utilization varied for different operations of rice cultivation. The operation of weeding, harvesting and threshing needed more time for seeding method and lower number of laborers was needed for this seeding method for crop establishment.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of planting techniques and variety on the growth, yield and labour utilization for irrigated rice cultivation

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the West Byde of BRRI Farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur during Boro season, 1999 to observe the effect of planting techniques and variety on the growth, yield and labour utilization for irrigated rice cultivation. The experiment comprised of three planting techniques viz., i) sowing dry seeds in the puddle plots, ii) sowing peregrinated seeds in the puddle plots, and iii) transplanting seedlings in the puddle plots, and Two varieties viz., i) BRRI dhan28 and ii) BRRI dhan29. The experiment was conducted using Randomized Complete Block (RCB) design with three replications. The unit plot size of the experimental plot was 10 sq. m. Fertilizers were applied in the experimental plot as urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate at the rate of 270-130-120-70 and 10 kg ha^-1. Whole amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc suphate were applied prior to final land preparation. Urea was top dressed in three equal splits at 15, 45 and 55 days after transplanting (DAT). Thirty five days old seedlings of rice (cv. BRRI dhan28 & BRRI dhan29) were transplanted on 30th December 1999 with 20cm×20cm spacing. All other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data on yield contributing characters were collected from five randomly selected plants and grain yield was recorded from an area of 5m² at maturity stage of the crop. Time requirement (man-dayha^-1) for harvesting and threshing were recorded during the period of operation where, eight hours work for laborers was considered as one man-day. Collected data were statistically analyzed using a standard statistical procedure and differences among treatments were adjudged by Least Significant Difference (LSD) test.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that higher yield was obtained of BRRI dhan29 from the transplanted method. On the other hand, labor utilization varied for different operations of rice cultivation. The operation of weeding, harvesting and threshing needed more time for seeding method and the lower number of laborers were needed for this method (seeding method) for crop establishment.
