Evaluation of Winter Leafy Vegetables at the Coastal Char Land of BRRI Sonagazi Farm.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To meet up the nutritional problems of the people of coastal char areas a field experiment was initiated during Rabi season 20005-06 in non- replicated plots of BRRI farm, Sonagazi. The objective of the study was to identify the suitable leafy vegetables tolerance to salinity and produced more economic yield and farmer's preference. Four leafy vegetables i.e., Lal shak, palong shak, mula shak and bati shak were tested. The salinity level of the experimental plots during the growing period ranged from 3.5- 6.0dS/m. Results showed that among the four leafy vegetables, the Bati shak produced the highest yield of 70kg/dec. followed by Mula shak (20 kg/dec.) which market price were Tk. 375/dec. and Tk. 140/dec respectively. The lowest yield of 13 kg/dc was produced by Lal shak which market price was Tk. 91/dec only.

Methodology:

A field experiment on the evaluation of winter leafy vegetables at the coastal char land was initiated during Rabi season 20005-06 in non- replicated plots of BRRI farm, Sonagazi, Feni. Four leafy vegetables i.e., Lal shak, palong shak, mula shak and bati shakwere tested. The salinity level of the experimental plots during the growing period ranged from 3.5- 6.0dS/m. The seed rates were 38, 350, 15 and 244g for Lal shak, palong shak, mula shak and bati shak, respectively. Recommended organic manure and fertilizers were applied. The crops were 2 times irrigated from the mini ponds of rainwater harvested. The market price of lal shak, palong mula shak and bati shak was considered as 7.0, 8.0, 4.0 and 5.0Tk/kg respectively.

To meet up the nutritional problems and vegetables scarcity of the people of coastal char areas, farmers can cultivate leafy vegetables i.e., Lal shak, palong shak, mula shak and bati shak for producing more economic yield, tolerance to salinity and also the farmer's preference during Rabi season.
