It is evident from the table that Nageshwari gained more body weight (925 g) than other two breeds by 180 days, when daily body weight gain of Nageshwari was 5.56 g followed by Rupali (5.18 g) and Deshi (4.23 g). Similar trend in body weight gain was observed in non-supplementary groups. Body weight by 180 days in this group was the highest in Nageshwari (3.63 g) followed by Rupali (3.33 g) and Deshi (3.00 g). Yeong and Faizah (1981) observed that local ducks gained less live weight compared to hybrid ducks which corresponded well with present findings. It is interesting to note that in comparison to non-supplementary group, supplementary feed group of ducks attained on an average 2.0 g more body weight gain daily during 180-day study period. It is evident from the table that supplementary feed group of ducks laid more number of eggs, irrespective of duck genotypes, where the highest number of egg (116) was found in Nageshwari and the lowest in Deshi (80) during 9 months of egg production. Average egg weight was higher in supplementary group than non supplementary group, which also reflected on total egg mass production. The ducks belonging to supplementary feed group attained sexual maturity 12 to 15 days earlier than non-supplementary feed group.

  2. To select a suitable genotype for the area.
  3. To develop an appropriate economic feeding and rearing system.

Twenty four farmers were selected from the village Purbo Tethulia to conduct the experiment with duck. The farmers were selected on the basis of their previous experiences and interests on duck rearing. The selected farmers were almost similar in socio-economic status. The farmers were divided into two groups of twelve in each for rearing two feed groups of ducks viz. supplementary and non-supplementary. All the farmers were given day long training on duck rearing system. Each farmer was given eight birds from any three (Nageshwari. Rupali and Deshi) genotypes of duck. Sexually matured ducks of three genotypes viz., Nageshwari. Rupali and Deshi were distributed to the farmers in order to study the egg production performance and egg quality characteristics. Feeding trial was conducted at farmer’s house with conventional management practices in semi-scavenging rearing systems. The experiment was conducted following completely randomized design having 4 replications (Households) for each genotype of Nageshwari. Rupali and Deshi ducks. The experimental ducks were reared under the existing husbandry practices conventionally done in the village when ducks were allowed to scavenge from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm day-1.In supplementary feed group, addition to scavenging feed, all the birds belonging to three different genotypes were supplied with a composite feed of 70 g daily in two equal halves, once early morning before allowing them for scavenging and evening after coming from scavenge. Before handing over the ducks to the selected farmers, they were vaccinated against duck plague and fowl cholera and thereafter the birds were vaccinated to farmer’s house. Live weight of individual bird was recorded in the morning before feeding. Live weight of each bird was taken every fortnightly during four to six months and one month interval during six months and onwards. Final live weight was recorded at the end of the experiment and weight gain was calculated by deducting the initial weight from the final weight. The survivability percent of the birds was calculated separately for each replication at the end of the experiment, dividing the number of birds alive by the number of birds reared and multiplying by 100.

Farmers of Purbo Tethulia have been rearing ducks over the years as a part of their livestock production systems. Scavenging system of duck rearing was followed by almost all of the farmers in haor areas due to easy rearing system and availability of natural aquatic feeds for ducks. Supplementation of feed to scavenging ducks improved growth, egg productivity, and gross margin and reduced mortality. Higher gross margin was attained from rearing superior blood group of Nageshwari duck. Therefore rearing of Nageshwari duck with supplementary feed may be practiced as an income generating activity among the haor people.
