Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This working plan consists of three parts. Book I features an elaborate description of the Sundarbans with resources and planned intervention design to develop and protect the resources. Book II contains the management plan itself which is viewed in 3 stages- the interim period 1998-2000,the period 2000-2005 and the period 2005-2010.This also features the various programs covering regulatory, conservation and development areas and a 12 year revenue forecasting. Book III contains the appendixes and various attachments required to elaborate the description and prescription for further needed.The last working plan in effect ended with the A.M.Choudhury working plan (1960-80).Since the there were an attempts to develop a new working plan with little success.The proposed conservative levels of commercial utilization of the Sundarbans and the accompanying regulatory measures are expected to maintain the sustainability of the resources and still generate huge potential revenues for the government way above the total cost of implementing the various programs needed.

Objectives:

1.To regulate harvest of timber and other resources to sustainable levels.

2.To improve the regenerative capacity of timber, non timber and aquatic resources.

3.To reduce the rate of unofficial extraction of timber resources.

4.To generate stakeholder support and build new constituencies in resources conservation.

5.To enhance the Biodiversity and tourism potential of the Sundarbans.

Methodology:

This working plan was prepared under the auspices of the GoB/ WB Forest Resources Management project(FRMP) and is one of the major tasks of the Technical Assistance Component(TA) contracted to the Mandala Agricultural Development Corporation (MADECOR). The result of prevent inventories pointed to the fact that the Sundarbans timber resources are being utilized at unsustainable levels and the vast aquatic resources are likewise running low. Thus this plan addressed the need to adopt a more conservative approach to the utilization of the timber, non timber and the aquatic resources.

Achievement/Findings:

This management plan will enhanced for Conservation and development the Sundarbans and its resources, utilization of the major and minor forest products, development of tourism within the Sundarbans and .improvement of the management practices for millennium development.The importance of the Sundarbans in the context of its social, environmental and economic contributions to the country is well recognized.
