Influence of Oyster Mushroom (pleurotus Ostreatus) to Improve Hemoglobin Level of Anemic Female Volunteers Suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Current study was conducted to investigate the effect of Pleurotus ostreatus on improving hemoglobin status of diabetic female volunteers suffering from anemia. Fasting plasma glucose was estimated to determine diabetes. Blood hemoglobin concentration were determined before and three months after administration of Pleurotus ostreatus capsule. Baseline hemoglobin concentration (gm/dl) before mushroom supplementation was 11.47 ± 0.18 which was raised to 12.91 ± 0.37 after mushroom consumption. Daily feeding of three grams mushroom capsule showed significant elevation on hemoglobin level (p = 0.000). Estimating the iron (Fe) content of Oyster mushroom, it was observed that Pleurotus ostreatus contain sufficient amount of Fe (33.15 ± 3.23 mg/100 gm in dried weight basis) required for erythropoisis. So, from the current study it was assumed that Pleurotus ostreatus is able to compensate hemoglobin content of anemic female subjects suffering from type 2 diabetes.

Objectives:

To investigate the effect of Pleurotus ostreatus on improving hemoglobin status of diabetic female volunteers suffering from anemia.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the Laboratory of Strengthening Mushroom Development Project, National Mushroom Development and Extension Center (NAMDEC), Sobhanbag, Savar, Dhaka. Total 17 female subjects suffering from type 2 diabetes aged from 26.to 57 years, reside at Savar (Dhaka) were considered in the study. The subjects were clarified about the study and after getting their written consent showing willingness to participate in the study they were included. The details history was taken from the subjects which included age, sex, occupation, educational status, marital status, family history and drug history. Any other acute or chronic disease or mal-absorption during the study was excluded from the study. None of the male subjects were included. Fresh fruiting body of Pleurotus ostreatus was collected from culture house of NAMDEC. Collected mushrooms were dried at moisture level 4-5% then grinded and pour into capsule shells which contain 500 mg powder. Prepared apsules were preserved into moisture free glass container which was ready to dispense. At the beginning of study, subjects were evaluated for health status. Fasting blood sample was estimated. Mushroom capsules which contain 500 mg Pleurotus ostreatus powder in each were supplied to take two capsules three times daily, so that, each subject took 3 gms mushroom powder daily. After three months the subjects were evaluated and estimation of blood samples was repeated. If any drug previously getting by the subjects, it was continued. The recorded characteristics of the subjects were analyzed by standard statistical methods using computer software, SPSS package programme. Results were expressed as mean ± SE. Paired Student’s ‘t’ test was used to see the level of significance. 95% confidence limit was taken as level of significance.

Achievement/Findings:

These results suggest that mushrooms are very good nutrition source for mankind who looks for new and alternative food and nutrition source all the time. In Bangladesh anemia and malnutrition is a common health problem due to inadequate or disproportionate intake of essential nutrients. Also females are prone to develop anemia due to their periodic blood loss during menstruation. On the other hand uncontrolled diabetes causes renal impairment which hampered proper synthesis and secretion of erythropoietin, the essential hormone responsible for red cell production. So in case of diabetes, females are more prone to anemia. In this perspective regular intake of Oyster mushroom may be able to protect the female diabetic subjects from developing anemia.
