Prevalence of Seed Borne Pathogen of Some Spices Crops

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To record the micro-organisms associated with spices seeds a study was conducted in the laboratory of Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. Different spices seed samples were collected from Regional Spices Research Centre, Gazipur and from farmers’ field. A total of 27 seed samples Coriander, Chilli, Jowan, Black Cumin, Radhuni, Mouri, Methi, sholuc, Bunchy onion, Firingi and onion were included in this study. Two hundred seeds from each sample was tested on moist blotter paper @ 25 seeds per plate and incubated for seven days at room temperature. Data were taken on associated fungi, their prevalence and expressed in percentage. Seeds from different sources got different degrees infection with different pathogens.

Objectives:

So the study was initiated to record the micro organisms associated with spices seeds.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in the laboratory of Plant Pathology Division at Gazipur by collecting different spices seed samples from Regional Spices Research Centre, Gazipur and from farmers field. A total of 27 seed samples (3, 7, 4, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1 & 3 samples, respectively of Coriander, Chilli, Jowan, Black Cumin, Radhuni, Mouri, Methi, sholuc, Bunchy onion, Firingi and onion) were included in this study. Two hundred seeds from each sample was tested on moist blotter paper @ 25 seeds per plate and incubated for seven days at room temperature. Data were taken on associated fungi, their prevalence and expressed in percentage.

Achievement/Findings:

Coriander: Seven fungi of the genera Curvularia, Alternaria, Fusarium, Protomyces, Chaetomium were recorded. Among these Alternaria tenuis, Chaetomium globosum and Curvularia sp. were predominant. Chilli: A total of nine fungi representing eight genera were identified. They were Colletotrichum, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Aspergillus, Alternaria, Curvularia, Rhizopus and Epicoccum. Among the fungal genera Colletotrichum and Alternaria were predominent in BARI seed, genera Aspergillus and Alternaria were predominant in chilli seed sample. Farmer seeds were highly infested with microbes compare to BARI seed. Joan: Twelve fungi representing nine genera were isolated from Jowan seed. Curvularia lunata (15%) was maximum in BARI seed and Alternaria tenuis, A. brassicicola, and Curvularia sp. were more prevalent in farmer seed. Onion: A total of nine fungi representing eight genera were detected from BARI seed. Among the fungal species, Alternaria tenuis, Curvularia & A. porri were predominant compared to rest of the fungi irrespective f onion seed. Black cumin, mouri and Methi. As many as fourteen fungal species were detected from the seeds of black cumin. Mouri and Methi. Of them, seven species were recorded from black cumin. Maximum number of Alternaria tenuis was recorded from both BARI seed and farmer seed. In Mouri seed, the highest (45%) number of A. brassicola was recorded in farmers' seed and the lowest number (1%) Aspergillus flovicaps was recorded from BARI seed. A total of eleven species were found from Methi seed. Maximum incidence of Alternaria tenuis (36%) was observed in BARI methi and maximum incidence of Aspergillus flavas (48%) was observed in farmer Methi seed. Other spices crop. A total of sixteen fungal species were recorded from Bunchy onion, Fhiringi, Sallok and Radhuni. Of them, 5, 3, 6 and 9 fungal pathogen were recorded respectively from seeds of bunchy onion, fhiringi, sallok and Rhadhuni
