To determine the effectiveness of different control approaches against foot rot/collar rot of lentil, the experiment was conducted during 2004-05 at Plant Pathology Division, BARI, Gazipur. The experiment was conducted following artificial inoculation of S. rolfsii in sterilized soil under Pot. The experiments was consisted with 20 treatments (0rganic amendments -3, Antagonist -1, Fungicide 15 and control) and replicated thrice. Result revealed that all control approaches significantly reduced the pre and post emergent mortality over control. In general fungicides performed better in controlling the disease compare to organic amendments and antagonist.

So the study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of different control approaches against the disease rot/collar rot in vivo and in vitro.

A. Screening of different fungicides in vitro against Sclerotium rolfsii:  The experiment was conducted using PDA media following "Poison food technique." Pure culture of S. rolfsii was maintained on PDA in plates. A total of 15 fungicides viz. Companion, Vitavax, Forastin Eva-eilt, Winner, Steel, Antisika, Proven, Protaf, Sedazim, Zimguard, Propicon Carbozim, Goldazim and corazim were included. All fungicides were used at 1000 ppm concentration. One ml of fungicidal solution was poured in each petriplates and then 20 ml of molten medium was added per Petri plate. After solidification mycelial disc (7 mm diameter), cut from periphery of the fresh culture of the fungus was placed at the centre of each Petri plate. In control treatment no fungicidal solution was used. The plates were then incubated at room temperature for 8 days. Each treatment was replicated thrice. Data on colony growth was recorded after 4 days of incubation and continued up to 8 days at 2 days  interval.

B. Effectiveness of amendments and fungal antagonist in controlling foot rot of lentil: The experiment was conducted at BARI, Gazipur following artificial inoculation of S. rolfsii in sterilized soil under Pot. S. rolfsii multiplied on bearly grain inoculated in pot soil before 30 days of seed sowing (@ 5 gm/ kg soil). Each pot was provided 5 kg sterilized soil. The experiments was consisted with 20 treatments (0rganic amendments -3, Antagonist -1, Fungicide 15 and control) and replicated thrice. Each pot was provided with 10 seeds. Organic amendments viz mustard oilcake (MOC) @ 1 ton/ ha and poultry refuse @ 10 ton/ha were added before 21 days of seed sowing; while sawdust burning was done one day before seed sowing. Antagonist Trichoderma harzianum and fungicides were incorporated, respectively seven and one day before seed sowing. Data were taken on pre and post emergent mortality and expressed in percentage. Percent data were transformed using square root transformation before statistical analysis.

A. Screening of fungicides in vitro against S. rolfsii: At the end of incubation period, it was found that fungicides, Companion, Vitavax, Evacilt, Winner, Steel, Antisika, Proven, Protaf and Propicon totally inhibited the growth of  S. rolfsii.  The higher mycelial growth of 9 cm was recorded by Control and Zimgard and they were statistically identical but different significantly with rest of the fungicides.

B. Effectiveness of amendments and fungal antagonist in controlling foot rot of lentil: Result revealed that all control approaches significantly reduced the pre and post emergent mortality over control except zimgard. In general, fungicides performed better in controlling the disease compare to organic amendments and antagonist. The lowest foot rot incidence (3.67%) was recorded by Evaeilt and Vitavax. These two fungicides showed statistically similar effect in reducing pre-emergence mortality with Steel, Winner and Proven but differed significantly with rest of the treatments. Post emergent mortality ranged 4.33 to 34%. Significantly lower post emergent mortality was recorded by Vitavax and it was not significantly different from Ecacilt, Steel, Antisika and Protaf. When total mortality was considered it ranged 8.00 - 74.33% where the minimum was recorded in Vitavax followed by Evaeilt (10.33%), Steel (11.0%). Antisika (12.00%), Winner (13.66%), Protaf (13.67%), Proven (14.00%) and Propicon (15.00%).
