Yield Performance and Adaptability of Some Sweet Pepper (capsicum Annum L.) Genotypes at Gazipur, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was carried out on yield performance and adaptability in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) at the Research and Development Farm of East West Seed (BD) Ltd., Bashon, Gazipur during October 2003 to March 2004 and October 2004 to March 2005. Ten genotypes of sweet pepper collected from AVRDC designated as ISPN# 4.1 to ISPN # 4.10 were evaluated along with two locally available check varieties. Among the parameters days to 50% anthesis varied from 28.00 to 41.75, during 1^st season, while the variety check-2 took maximum days during second season. Similar trend was observed for days to maturity. Check variety-2 took108.8 days. Fresh biomass of five plants varied from 135.0 to 915.0 g. Variety check-1 produced the lowest fresh biomass (135g) during second season. Average individual fruit weight varied from 26.88 to 87.90g. Genotype ISPN # 4.2 produced the highest average individual fruit weight (87.90g). Maximum average fruit length was found in the genotype ISPN # 4.10 (10.77cm). Maximum average fruit width was found in the check variety-2 during first year (7.0cm). Yield varied significantly due to severe environmental fluctuation. Genotype ISPN # 4.9 showed the best potentiality for yield and adaptability.

Objectives:

There is no established variety of sweet peppers in Bangladesh. Therefore, the investigation was carried out to select ideal genotypes of capsicum for better adaptability and yield potentiality as well as proper time of planting in Gazipur district.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Research and Development Farm of East West Seed (BD) Ltd., Bashon, Gazipur during the period from October 2003 to March 2004 and October 2004 to March 2005. The soil belongs to the agro- ecological zone of Madhupur Tract (AEZ 28). The experimental soil was clay loam in texture having a P^H of 6.5. The altitude of the field was 24° North latitude and 90.5° East latitude. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Unit plot size was 5 m² with two rows of plants in each bed. Spacing of plant to plant and row to row was 50x50cm. Ten genotypes of sweet pepper were collected from Asian Vegetable Research and Development Centre, Taiwan. They were designated as ISPN# 4. 1 to ISPN# 4.10. ISPN stands for International Sweet Pepper Nursery. Two locally collected germplasm were used as check. Fertilizer was applied at a rate of 20000:250:200:150 kg/ha cowdung, Urea, TSP and MP respectively and irrigation was done when necessary. Earthing up and sticking was made as special management practices. Insecticides and fungicides were applied when necessary.

Achievement/Findings:

Genotype ISPN # 4.9 showed the best potentiality for yield and adaptability. Capsicum has high nutritional value especially Vitamin A and Vitamin C as well as high demand for export. Therefore, more investigation is necessary to select ideal genotype of sweet pepper for this country.
