Determination of Suitable Row Ratio and Spacing for F1 Seed Production of Commercial Rice Hybrid

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seed production difficulties are one of the major constraints in hybrid rice. The seed production technology should be standardized before launching this technology in commercial scale. In this context, an attempt was made to find out suitable row ratio and proper spacing for maximization of F1 seed yield of hybrid rice. Twelve rows of CMS line and two rows of restorer line appeared to be the optimum row-ratio along with 15×20 cm spacing between CMS lines. This combination found suitable and gave highest seed yield for F₁ seed production. The combination 2:12 row ratio with 15×20 cm spacing between CMS lines also yielded significantly higher tiller number, highest panicle exertion rate (PER) and outcrossing rate (OCR) that enhanced highest seed yield.

Objectives:

To standardize the appropriate row ratio and spacing for enhancing their optimum-outcrossing rate that could give higher seed yield under Bangladesh condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Research & Development farm of Energypac Agro Ltd, Monipur, Gazipur during Boro season 2007-08 & Boro season 2008-09. One of the popular commercial hybrid varieties of Energypac Agro Ltd Agro G-2 (Bizli) was used in this experiment. It is imported from China, Winall Hi-tech Seed Company and registered in SCA trial by the name of EL-9202 in the year of 2007 for Boro season evaluation. After two consecutive season trials it was released as commercial hybrid and named as Agro G-2. The experiment was conducted using CMS line of Agro G-2 along with its restorer line. Restorer was sown in two different date at six days interval and CMS line was sown in two days earlier of second set of it’s restorer line. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted at a spacing of 15 cm ×15 cm, 20 cm ×15 cm and 20 cm × 20 cm with 2:8, 2:10, 2:12 and 2:14 row ratio of R and A line using RCB factorial design with three replications. Plant to plant distance between restorer lines were 20 cm and between two restorer lines distance was 40 cm. Distance between A and R lines were 30 cm. Recommended fertilizer dose as 270, 130,120, 70 and 10 kg/ha of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum and ZnSO4, respectively were applied. Intercultural operations like rouging, GA3 application and supplementary pollination were performed as and when required. The male parents’ restorer lines were harvested first and taken out of the field before the harvesting of seed parent (CMS line). The threshed materials were properly dried and weighed at 14% moisture and the plot yield was measured for unit area and converted into ton/ha. Two consecutive Boro seasons average data was used to analysis this experiment.

Achievement/Findings:

For hybrid seed production twelve rows of CMS line and two rows of restorer line with the spacing of 15 x 20 cm between CMS lines seems to be the optimum row-ratio and spacing that could give higher F₁ seed yield. When an effective seed production infrastructure has developed in the public, private, or NGO sectors of the country, its seed production units should be closely linked with its hybrid rice research units to expedite the transfer of this technology.
