Genetic Variability and Correlation Analysis in Hybrid of Mulberry Silkworm, Bombyx Moril. for Cocoon Characters

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Inheritance and some cocoon characters association were studied using 35 hybrids of silkworm, Bombyx mori L. Variations among genotypes were significant (p<0.001). High values of heritability were recorded for male cocoon breadth (MCB) followed by female shell weight (FSW), male shell weight (MSW) and female cocoon breadth (FCB). But these characters showed low genetic advance indicating the involvement of non-additive gene systems in the inheritance of these characters. The genotypic correlations were higher than phenotypic correlation for all the characters under study. These low phenotypic correlations could be due to a modifying effect of environment of the associations of characters at genotypic level. Most of the characters under study showed positive significant correlation to each other although in majority cases female cocoon length (FCL) and male cocoon length (MCL) showed insignificant or low positive correlations at both the levels. Thus, progeny testing and recurrent selection on the basis of these characters especially MCW, FSW, MSW and FCB would be helpful for the improvement of silk yield in silkworm, B. mori L.

Objectives:

To estimate the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for some cocoon characters and correlations among them at phenotypic and genotypic levels of B. mori.

Methodology:

The material for this experiment of 35 F₁ hybrids which were produced by using 18 bivoltine and multivoltine varieties of silkworm, B. mori. These parents were obtained from the Germplasm Bank maintained at the Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute (BSRTI), Rajshahi. The crosses were made to produce 35 F₁hybrids. The eggs of F₁ hybrids were brushed (3dfls for each genotype) in a randomized design with three replications each. The rearing was conducted in the rearing house No. 2 of the BSRTI, Rajshahi. Data recorded for this study were female cocoon weight (FCW), male cocoon weight variation in the present study was contributed by the (MCW), female cocoon length (FCL), male cocoon genotypic components in all the characters. The item length (MCL), female cocoon breadth (FCB), male variety on the ANOV A was highly significant for all cocoon breadth (MCB), female shell weight (FSW), the characters indicating that the varieties possess a male shell weight (MSW), female shell ratio (FSR%) wide range of genetic diversities and these materials and male shell ratio (MSR%). The collected data were analyzed successively for estimated genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance. The phenotypic and genotypic correlations were calculated in the usual way.

From the present study of genetic parameters and character association, it would be suggested that progeny testing and a recurrent selection might be helpful to improve these traits with relatively more emphasis upon MCW, FSW, MSW and FCB and thus merit prime importance in selection with programmes for genetic gain in B. mori.
