A study was conducted in National Mushroom Development and Extension Centre, Savar, Dhaka to find out the influence of opening methods, soaking in water and covering materials on growth, yield and yield attributes of reishi mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum). Considerable variations on different parameters related to yield and yield attributes were recorded. The lowest duration (4.50 days) from opening of spawn packet to primordial initiation, opening to harvesting (33.25 days), number of fruiting body (2.25), dry weight (4.25g / packet) and biological efficiency (10.50%) were observed in treatment combinations of no covering, no soaking and top opening, which were statistically similar to control. The highest number of fruiting body (4.00), dry mushroom weight (7.25g / packet) and biological efficiency (16.21%) were recorded from the treatment combination, newspaper covering + soaking in water + top opening. Size of fruiting body increased where spawns packets were covered and soaked in water. Results suggested that covering, soaking in water and top opening combinations was the best cultural practices for commercial production and yield improvement of reishi mushroom.

To find out the influence of covering materials, opening methods and soaking in water on growth, yield and yield attributes of Ganoderma lucidum.

A 2x2x5 factorial experiment in completely randomized design with 4 replications was conducted in the culture house of National Mushroom Development and Extension Center, Savar, Dhaka during the period from July to October 2011. The first factor was covering materials, the second factor was soaking in water and the third factor was opening method of spawn packet. Five types of covering materials viz. no covering, newspaper, blue polypropylene (BPP), transparent polypropylene (TPP) and white cloth, and two opening method viz. top opening, single side opening at middle abdomen of spawn packets, and soaking in water and no soaking of spawn packets. The factors were tested in different combinations. The substrates of spawn packets were prepared by using mixed sawdust and wheat bran at the ratio of 2:1. Water was added to make the moisture level about 65% and CaCO3 was added at 0.2% (w/w) of the mixture. All the materials were mixed thoroughly. Polypropylene bags (18 cm × 25 cm) were filled with 500 g of substrate mixture. A neck of the bag was made using heat resistant plastic tube. A hole of about 2/3 deep of the volume of the bag was made at the centre of the bag with a sharp end stick. The neck of the bag was plugged with cotton and covered with a brown paper. After completion of mycelium running, spawn packets were opened following top opening and side opening method. In side opening methods, square sized (1cm×1cm) opening was cut on the single side at the middle abdomen of the packet. During incubation, the inoculated packets were kept in almost dark at about 25 0 C temperature and transferred to the culture room at 25-32 0 C temperature, 85-95% relative humidity and 250-350 lux light. Water was sprayed 4-5 times per day and proper aeration was maintained in culture house to facilitate the development of the fruiting bodies. The mushroom was harvested from both single flush and double flushes in the harvest period. Data on days to primordia initiation, final harvesting, number of fruiting bodies, length and diameter of stalk, diameter and thickness of pileus, dry yield of mushroom (g/packet) were recorded. Biological efficiency of the substrates was computed using standard method. Collected data were analyzed following Gomez and Gomez (1984) using MSTAT-C computer program. Means separation were done following Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) using the same computer program.
