Performance of Different Creeper Vegetables on Non-fruit Trees at Homestead Area in High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Non fruit trees are the important crop in High Barind Tract (HBT) due to drought tolerant capacity. The study was conducted at Kadamshohor, Rajshahi to find out the combinations of creeper vegetables and non-fruit trees in homestead area for vegetables production. Three non-fruit trees involving Palmyra palm, Babla and Neem trees were used for cultivating six different creeper vegetables namely bottle gourd, white gourd, country bean, sponge gourd, ribbed gourd and potato yam. One tree was considered as a treatment. Neem tree produced the highest bottle gourd equivalent yield (BEY) (15.10 kg tree^-1). Among the creeper vegetables, Bottle gourd gave the highest BEY (12.97 kg tree^-1) and lowest in sponge gourd (4.38 kg tree^-1). So, farmers in HBT can chose Neem tree for Bottle gourd production.

Objectives:

To find out the combinations of creeper vegetables and non-fruit trees in homestead area for vegetables production in High Barind Tract.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at Farming System Research and Development (FSRD) site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during 2013-14 to suitable combination of creeper vegetables and non-fruit trees in homstead area for vegetable production. The experimental area was high land of silty clay loam soils and belongs to the Amnura series of HBT under Agro Ecological zone 26. Three non-fruit trees namely Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer), Neem (Azadirachta indica) and Babla (Acacia nilotica) were selected for cultivation of six creeper vegetables named-bottle gourd, white gourd, country bean, sponge gourd, ribbed gourd and potato yam. The experiment was laid out in a factorial Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The factor A consisted of non-fruit tree and factor B consisted of creeper vegetables. Each tree was considered as one treatment. Different creeper vegetables were established on selected non-fruit trees. Country bean, potato yam and bottle gourd were planted on August 2013 and white gourd, sponge gourd and ribbed gourd were planted on late February 2014. One pit was maintained for each tree. Four to five seed were planted in each pit. Each pit was fertilized with 75-50-50g urea, TSP and MoP, respectively. Staking was used for establishment the plant. Irrigation, weeding and other operations were done for normal growth of plant. Country bean and bottle gourd were harvested from November 2013 to February 2014. White gourd, sponge gourd and ribbed gourd were harvested from May-July 2014 and potato yam harvested June 2014. Yield data was recorded tree wise. For comparison of different vegetables yield was converted to bottle gourd equivalent yield. Recorded data were analyzed statistically using “Analysis of variance (ANOVA)” of Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with factorial arrangements of treatments. The means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

There are many non-fruit trees at homestead in High Barind area. These trees can be used for creeper vegetables production that can support vegetable demand of the farm family. It can be concluded that Neem tree would be better for cultivation of creepers.
