Professor (Rural Hydrology and Mechanization Specialist)
Department of Irrigation and Water Management, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202

The maximum water depth at Eid-gah Math site was found as 2.90 m during the last week of September 2010. Then the flood water receded slowly and continued upto mid January 2011 having a water depth of 0.7 m. The depth of water at Khaler Par was around 2.7 m from 4th week of August to last week of September 2010. Afterwards the depth of water started to fall and came upto 0.2 m. At Purbo Para a water depth of around 2.8 m prevailed from 4th week of August to last of week of September 2010. Then the water depth started to fall sharply upto 1st week of November 2010. Then the water level remained almost constant having a depth of around 0.8 m upto 3rd week of December 2010. The water level fluctuation pattern for 23 May to 28 November, 2011) at Purbapara, Khaler par (bridge) and Eid-gah Maath. The maximum water depth at Purbapara site was found as 2.75 m during the middle of August 2011. Then the flood water receded slowly and continued up to the end of November 2011 having a water depth of 0.65 m. The maximum depth of water at Khaler Paar was around 3.0 m during the 3rd week of August 2011. Afterwards the depth of water started to fall and came up to 0.35 m. At Eid-gah Maath the water depth became close to 3.0 m during the 1st week of July and then slowly dropped to around 1.8 m during mid-August which again went up to 2.9 m during third week of August 2011. Then the water depth started to fall uniformly up to the last week of November 2011.

To know the pattern of incoming and outgoing flood water at the farm land of Purba Tethulia.

Three graduated water depth monitoring staff gauges were installed at three different strategic locations of Purbo Tethulia during 2010-2011. The locations were (i) Near Eid-gah Math (ii) Khaler Par (bridge) & (iii) Purbapara. The depth of water for every location was recorded at an interval of 1 day, 2 days and 3 days depending on the nature of incoming and outgoing flood water.  On 25 June 2011 and 6 June 2012, water depths at suitable locations of Putijhuri, Kheyaghat, LIFCHASA STW site, “Shail” area and northern side of submersible pucca road were recorded with the help of a long bamboo stick. Later on, these depths were monitored and adjusted with respect to water depths of some easy access points which moved forward and backward depending on flood water movement. The water depths were recorded at an interval of 1 day, 2 days and 3 days depending on the nature of incoming and outgoing flood water.

The maximum water depth at Putijhuri site was found 4.32 m during the middle of July 2012. Then the flood water receded slowly and continued up to the end of October 2012 having a water depth of 2.70 m. The maximum depth of water at Kheyaghat was around 3.15 m during the middle of July 2012. Afterwards the depth of water started to fall and come up to 1.53 m at the end of October 2012. At LIFCHASA STW site, the water depth became close to 1.50 m during mid July and then slowly disappeared during late October 2012 when the field was ready for cultivation. The flooding depths during the study period varied from 3.45 to 1.40 m  and 3.10 to 1.05 m  at “Shail” area and northern side of submersible pucca road, respectively.
