Limno-biological Studies in Chalan-beel, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Limno-biological investigation of Chalan-beel was carried out for three consecutive years from May, 2003 to April, 2006 at monthly interval. A total of 115 genera of planktonic form of algae were recorded. Of which, 55 belonged to Chlorophyceae, 28 to Cyanophyceae, 24 to Bacillariophyceae, 4 to Euglenophyceae, 2 to Xanthophyceae and 2 to Dinophyceae. The correlation coefficient (r) between the plankton abundance and physico-chemical parameters have also been calculated. Both the data of physicochemical and biological parameters revealed that the studied habitat is of eutrophic nature.

Objectives:

1. To determine the baseline data of physicochemical and biological variable of beel water.

2. To find out the interrelationship between studied parameters.

3. To carry out the present situation that means the present nature of the beel as an aquatic ecosystem.

Methodology:

The central part of the Chalan-beel proper, which remains under water all the year round, was selected as the study zone. In all 17 sampling spots, spread over the study zone, were selected for the collection of planktonic algal samples at monthly intervals. The collection of plankton was made by a plankton net of No. 20 silk bolting cloth. Considering the absence of apparent visual bloom in the flow-running water of the beet; 75, liters of water collection from below the surface, were passed through the net. Water was poured round the inner side of the net to wash dawn the adhering plankter from the meshes. The plankton concentrate was immediately preserved either in 5% formalin or in Transeau's Solution in vials. The concentrate in vials was made to 10 ml. in each by adding more preservative. These were regarded as original concentrate and stored for analysis and enumeration. Physico-chemical conditions of water were estimated following the methods stated in APHA (1989), FAO (1984) and other standard international methods. Some of chemical analyses were made on the spot while others were done in the Phycology and Limnology Laboratory, Department of Botany, Rajshahi University.

Achievement/Findings:

From the above discussion, it may be concluded that the Chalan-beel is of slightly acidic to alkaline nature, slightly polluted, considerably productive and over all this studied wetland is of eutrophic nature. Both the data of physico-chemical and biological parameters support these findings. Besides the above, due to continuous deposition of silt and alluvium borne by flood water and also deposition of organic matter from the death and decomposition of hydrophytes, the bed of the beel has been continuing to rise up gradually. During the recent years the ecological, topographic floristic and wildlife composition of this wetland have undergone undesirable changes due to construction of infra-structure for urbanization, industrialization, modernization in agriculture and in water-transport systems, extensive drainage of human settlements, farmland formation, flood control dams and embankments, road construction which lead to drainage congestion and prolonged flood. All these developments and human activities add to the pollution and eutrophication hazards putting stress on the flora and fauna as noticed by Rosfjord et., al. (2007). As a result of which the wetland has become ecologically fragile. It may be apprehended that in the near future this flowing marsh may succeed into an occasional flood plain.
