Study on Pond Characteristics

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The central water depth and the corresponding top water surface area for each of the ponds as a function of time during 2011-2012. The central water depths varied from 4.70 m to 0.57 and occurred mostly during early October and early March 2011, respectively. The top water surface areas were found to vary from 2900 m² to 370 m² during 2011-2012. The central water depths varied from 4.60 m to 0.99 m. The top water surface areas were found to vary from 2839 m² to 395 m² during 2012-2013. Both the deepest central depths and maximum top water surface areas were found mostly during mid-October 2012, whereas, the minimum values of the said parameters occurred during mid-February, 2013. Both the central depth and water surface area are important considerations for fish culture, irrigation and domestic uses.

Objectives:

To know the central water depth and top water surface area round the year
To know the flood water connectivity characteristics
To study the utilization of pond water

Methodology:

All the 11 ponds of the study area were brought under consideration to collect information to fulfill the above mentioned objectives. The initial central water depth for each pond was measured with the help of a long narrow bamboo stick. Afterwards, these depths were monitored and adjusted weekly from the rise and fall of the water level measured from a suitable reference point close to the bank of the respective pond. The top water surface area of each pond was also recorded weekly using simple measuring tape. The flood water connectivity and disconnectivity of the ponds were recorded as and when necessary. The time of water removal from the concerned ponds were also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

The water of most of the ponds was pumped out during dry period mainly for irrigation purpose and fish catching. All the 11 ponds of the study area got connected with flood water. Therefore, previous records of flood water connectivity behavior are very important for planning pond fish culture and other uses of pond water.
