Performance Evaluation of Lifchasa Shallow Tubewell

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The discharge of the tubewell was found to be 7.50 l/s which is much below the national average (10-12 l/s) in case of STWs. The main reason of this low discharge is the low transmissibility of the aquifer which consists of fine sand. The other reasons are mechanical problems associated with engine, pump and suction conditions, etc. The delivery performance ratio (DPR) was found to be 0.54 for the LIFCHASA STW. The conveyance loss in the irrigation canal depends upon whether it is lined or unlined. The distribution system of the study area consists of unlined small irrigation canals. The average loss per 100 m of canal was found to be 1.13 l/s (15% of the discharge). The conveyance loss was low because the soil textural class is silt-loam and is naturally well-compacted. Better maintenance of irrigation canal is essential in order to reduce the conveyance loss and hence to improve irrigation system performance. The command area of the tubewell was found 6.0 ha which included both vegetable and rice growing area. The irrigated area ratio (IAR) was observed to be 0.75.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of LIFCHASA STW using some selected indicators.

Methodology:

Evaluation of performances of the STW was carried out using the following standard set of performance indicators: Delivery Performance Ratio (DPR): The simplest and probably the most important hydraulic performance indicator is: DPR = Actual discharge/Targeted discharge Target discharge of a tubewell is the standard design discharge of its pump and was taken as 14 l/s. The target discharge was based on pump horsepower and drawdown-discharge-efficiency relationship.Conveyance Loss Ratio (CLR): This ratio, which indicates the relative amount of water loss in a canal reach due to canal seepage, percolation, leakage, overflow etc. is defined as: CLR = (inflow-outflow)/inflow

Irrigated Area Ratio (IAR): This indicator becomes more important where water is a limiting resource towards irrigation development. The indicator is expressed as: IAR = actual irrigated area/ target area. Potential command area was assumed based on pump capacities and crop water requirements. Field data were collected through direct measurements and questionnaire survey. Data on tubewell discharge, conveyance losses in the irrigation canals and length of irrigation canals were collected through direct measurements. The tubewell discharges were measured on volume basis using a big container and a stop watch. The cutthroat flumes were used to measure the conveyance losses using inflow and outflow method

Achievement/Findings:

Five new STWs have been sunk (Map 3.1) within a short time by other innovating farmers who were motivated from the success of the LIFCHASA sunk STW. All the newly sunk tubewells were successfully used for irrigation purpose and consequently the farmers were making substantial profit out of their farm products. This was a positive impact on irrigated agriculture at Purba Tethulia emerged from LIFCHASA activities.
