Study on Mechanization in Terms of Tillage and Threshing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Almost all the farmers of the study area got the tillage operations done with the help of power tillers, generally of Chinese origin. The power of the engines varied from 10-14 Hp and the fuel (diesel) consumption varied from 1.5 to 2.0 l/hr. The rated engine speed was found to vary from 2000 to 2200 rpm. The tilling capacity varied from 30 to 40 deci/hr. The depth in case of single tilling was found between 3 and 4 cm, whereas, the same for double tilling was 5 to 6 cm. The farmers who do not own a power tiller get their land tilled by paying a charge of Tk. 120/10 deci for single operation and Tk. 200/10 deci for double operation. Rice threshing is done on the farmland with the help of locally made closed-drum threshers operated mostly with Chinese engines of 12-16 Hp having fuel (diesel) consumption rates of 1.5 to 2.0 l/hr. The rated speed of the engines studied varied from 2000 to 2200 rpm. The threshing capacity was found to vary from 1800 to 2200 kg/hr. The threshing charge was found to be uniform which is 5% of the threshed product. The thresher is hired for the threshing season by a group of 4 to 8 persons by paying a charge of Tk. 18,000 to 22,000 to the owner of the thresher. The other mode of hiring the thresher is to pay one-third of threshing income to the owner. After the threshing is over, the same engine is used for tillage, transportation and boat plying etc.

Objectives:

To evaluate the performance of power tillers used for land tillage.
To evaluate the performance of threshers.

Methodology:

The concerned farmers, drivers and persons involved with the operation and maintenance of power tillers and threshers were interviewed to know the required information. Some data were also recorded from the body of the engine. The tillage performances of power tillers were determined during field operation . The amount of threshed rice was weighed for a threshing time of 3 to 5 minutes. The feeding of rice bundles in to the thrusting drum was made at an average speed. This sample weight was them converted to determine the hourly threshing capacity of the concerned thresher.
