Water Quality Assessment for Irrigation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The values of pH, electrical conductivity (EC), sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), bicarbonate (HCO₃), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP), residual sodium bi-carbonate (RSBC) and total dissolved solids (TDS) for surface water varied from 6.2 to 6.5, 122 to 463 mScm^-1, 0.25 to 0.68, 0.10 to 0.90, 0.16 to 1.20, 0.07 to 0.13, 0.80 to 2.40 meL^-1, 0.40 to 0.76, 21 to 55, 0.60 to 1.50 and 102 to 273 ppm, respectively. On the other hand, the values of the corresponding parameters for ground water varied from 6.5 to 7.1, 485 to 954 mScm^-1, 0.37 to 1.59, 0.10 to 0.50, 1.44 to 2.00, 0.08 to 0.23, 5.40 to 8.90 meL^-1, 0.41 to 1.47, 23 to 44, 5.30 to 8.40 and 233 to 447 ppm, respectively. All these values were found more or less within the safe limit indicating that the water can safely be used for irrigation purpose.

Objectives:

To study the suitability of surface and ground water for irrigation purpose.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during February 2013 for assessing the irrigation water quality of surface and ground water. Five shallow tubewells and five spots for surface water were randomly selected covering the entire study area to collect the water samples. Ten plastic containers each of one liter capacity were cleaned properly to carry the collected samples. Tubewell water samples were collected only after pumping for at least one hour. The water samples were stored in a cool place and transferred promptly to the Humboldt Soil Testing Laboratory, BAU, for analysis. In order to assess the quality of irrigation water presently being used at Purba Tethulia, the values of various parameters related to water quality such as, sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, bicarbonate, pH and electrical conductivity were determined. Using these parameters, the various irrigation water quality indicators such as, total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP) and residual sodium bi-carbonate (RSBC) were calculated
