Effect of Different Amount of Rice Straw on Growth and Yield of Pleurotus Salmoneostramineus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to determine the optimum amount of rice straw used as a substrate for the production of Pleurotus salmoneostramineus mushroom in Bangladesh during September to November 2010. The maximum days required for stimulation to primordia initiation (DRSPI) was 3.25 recorded when 1500 g and 1250 g rice straw were used and the minimum DRSPI 2.25 was found in 250 g and 500g rice straw was used. The highest numbers of effective fruiting bodies 97.25 and biological yield 534.50 were recorded in 1500 g rice straw. Whereas the lowest number of effective fruiting bodies 27.75 and biological yield 106.00 were found in 250 g rice straw. The highest biological efficiency 84.80 % was found in 250 g rice straw and the lowest biological efficiency 54.26 % was found when 750 g rice straw used as substrate for the cultivation of pleurotus salmoneostramineus

Objectives:

To find out the suitable amount of rice straw which are economically more feasible for the cultivation of such a prospective mushroom Pleurotus salmoneostramineus in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the culture house of National Mushroom Development and Extension Centre, Sobhanbag, Savar, Dhaka from September to November 2010. In this experiment, Pleurotus salmoneostramineus were selected and was grown on different amounts such as 250g (T₁), 500g (T₂), 750g (T₃), 1000g (T₄), 1250g (T₅) and 1500 g (T₆ ) of rice straw. Rice straw was chopped to 3-4 inch length and then pasteurized at 60 ⁰C for one hour and spread over to attain 50% moisture level. The above mentioned amount of rice straw was filled in the polypropylene bags. The bags were inoculated with the mother culture of selected strains of pleurotus salmoneostramineus mushroom and their mouths were plugged by inserting water absorbing cotton with the help of plastic neck. The packets were kept in a room at 25 ⁰C. After inoculation when colonization was completed, the spawn packets were taken to the culture house and were opened by ‘D’ shaped cut on the shoulder side and removed the sheet. The relative humidity 80-90% and the temperature 22-27 ⁰C of the culture house were maintained by spraying water. Diffused day light and proper ventilation in culture house were maintained. After first harvest scraping was done again watering and other operations were done as mentioned before. The experiment was laid out following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 replications. Yield and yield parameters were taken on the basis of three flushes. Data on days required from stimulation to primordia initiation, days required from stimulation to first harvest, number of effective fruiting body, length of stipe, diameter of stipe, diameter of pileus, thickness of pileus, biological yield and efficiency were recorded.
