Neutral Sulphite Anthraquinone Pulping of Jute Stick

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Jute stick responds well to neutral sulphite anthraquinone (NS-AQ) pulping. The process gives fully defiberized pulp with jute stick even at a high lignin content. The pulp yield is quite high. The physical strength properties of the pulp are, however, very poor, Consequently, the pulp needs blending with a stronger pulp for paper making.

Objectives:

To investigate whether jute stick can be used for making chemical pulp.

Methodology:

Jute stick was collected on retting Corchorus capsularis variety of jute plant in a pond. The stick was dried in the sun and cut manually into 3-5 cm in length. This stock served as the control.Pulping was done in two litre stainless steel autoclaves. The amount of sample in each cook was 125 g for the stick and 250 g for retted fibre on oven-dry basis. The analytical grades Na₂SO₃ and Na₂CO₃was used as cooking liquor.

The following cooking parameters were maintained:

Total alkali charge (Na₂SO₃+ Na₂CO₃. expressed as NaOH, varying.
Alkali ratio defined as Na₂SO₃/ (Na₂SO₃. + Na₂CO₃) all as NaOH equivalents, 0.83
Anthraquinone dose, 0.1% and 0.2% on od raw material
Liquor to stick or fibre ratio 7:1
Rate of temperature rise, 1⁰C per minute (from 80⁰C onwards) preceded by 15 minutes heating from room temperature to 80⁰C
Cooking temperature, 170⁰C
Cooking time at 170⁰C, 3.5 hr

At the end of digestion, the autoclaves were immersed in a water bath . The spent liquor was drained off. The cooked material was then washed thoroughly and disintegrated. Screening was done on a flat vibratory screen . The screening pulp was then pressed to remove the excess water, shredded and weighed. The rejects were dried and weighed.

The dry matter content and the pulp yield were then calculated. The kappa number of the pulp was also determined (SCAN- C1: 77). The pulp was refined in a PFI mill to different freenesses value and hand-sheets were made.

The physical strength properties of the pulp were determined according to Scan Test Methods after conditioning the hand sheets at 50 ±2% relative humidity and 23 ±1°C temperature
