Genetic Divergence of Yam (dioscorea Sp)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The genotypes were grouped into four clusters. Cluster II contains the maximum number of genotypes and cluster III the minimum. The highest intercluster distance was observed between cluster II & cluster III and lowest between cluster I & cluster IV. Maximum heterosis could be obtained using medium diverged parent. Highest intracluster distance was observed in cluster III that represents maximum variability within the cluster. Two characters, vine diameter and yield contribute most towards divergence

Objectives:

To select the genetic divergent parent in yam to obtain desirable recombinant in the segregating generations.

Methodology:

Twenty eight different germplasms were collected from Genetic Resource centre of BARI. The trial was conducted in RCB design with three replications. Each plot had two rows having inter and intra plant distance of 2m each and inter plot distance of 1m. 100 g N, 100 g P₂O₅, 200 g K₂O were applied in each plot (30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm). Data on days to emergence, first branching height from the ground, leaf length (cm), leaf breadth (cm), dry matter (%), ash (%), strach content (mg/100 g powder), yield (g) and seed yield ratio were recorded. Data were analyzed using genstat 5.13 software.
