Biology of Rice Bug, Leptocorisa Oratorius (fab.) on Rice and Three Selected Weeds

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Development, fecundity and longevity of the rice bug, Leptocorisa oratorius (Fab.) were studied on rice and selected weeds in the Greenhouse of Entomology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur during 2002 and 2003. The total nymphal duration office bug (RB) were 16.8, 14.2 and 13.5 days on Echinochloa colona, rice and E. crusgalli, respectively. The maximum body length was 1.5, 1.5 and 1.4cm when reared on rice, E. crusgalli and E. colona, respectively. The body weight of RB was higher on rice, followed by E. crusgalli and E. colona. The total number of eggs laid by a female bug was 130- 146.4, 125-139 and 212-224.28 on E. crusgalli, E. colona and rice, respectively in both 2002 and 2003. The longevity of both female and male RB was higher and identical when reared on rice (85.8 & 83.0 days) and E. crusgalli (65.2 & 62.6 days) but that was lowest on E. colona (54.8 & 49.0 days) during 2002. In 2003, the longevity of female RB was 61.2, 53.6 and 41.8 days on rice, E. crusgalli and E. colona, respectively. Male survived 45.4, 36.2 and 41.6 days on rice, E. crusgalli and E. colona, respectively during 2003. The longevity of female RB was higher than that of male on all three hosts. RBs attained up to 3rd instar and after that they did not moult when reared on Leptocorisa chinensis though they could live on an average of up to 16 days without moulting during the study periods. In the present study, considering growth indices and fecundity RB followed the order: rice> E. colona> E. crusgalli. L. chinensis was not found as a suitable host for RB.

Objectives:

The present study was aimed at investigating the total development, fecundity, and longevity of RB in three graminaceous weeds that would be helpful to know the ecology of RB and its survival mechanism during off-rice period.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted in the greenhouse of Entomology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, during April to August 2002 (Monsoon period) and September to November 2003 (Winter period). The average temperature and RH were 36.98⁰C (range 24.26-39.07⁰C) and 85% (range 77.20-90.23%), respectively in 2002. In 2003, the same were 35.65⁰C (range 21.25-37.28⁰ C) and 80% (range 75.19-84.98%), respectively. Three graminaceous weeds - Baro shama, Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beaur,Khude shama, E. colona (L.) Link. and Fulka, Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Ness.were used for rearing of RB. Rice variety BR3 was used as control host. Weeds were collected from nearby grassland and plants were maintained in the green house. Adult RBs were collected from the field and were reared on potted rice. One panicle of milk-hard dough stage of rice enclosed with mylar film was used as RB feed. The insects were allowed to mate and lay eggs on the plant. Just after hatching one 1st instar nymph of RB was released in grass and rice plants with the help of camel hair brush. Plants were changed every alternate day to provide enough food. There were 10 replications in each treatment from nymph to adult stage and 5 replications from adult to death. Moulting of each insect was recorded and thus nymphal duration of each instar and total nymphal duration were found. Incubation period, pre-oviposition and oviposition periods, fecundity, longevity, body length and body weight of RBs were also recorded. The body weight was taken by an electrical balance (Model Libror AEG 220). Data were analyzed by IRRISTAT software for analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the treatment means were separated by LSD.
