Effect of Nitrogen on Growth and Yield of Three Photosensitive Rice Cultivars

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of nitrogen at different rates (0. 60. 80. 100 and 120 kg N/ha) on growth and yield of three photosensitive rice cultivars were included in the study. Tiller production and total dry matter production increased considerably with the increase of added nitrogen in all the three varieties. The crop growth rate (CGR) leaf area index and net assimilation rate of all the varieties gradually increased and reached the peak during booting to flowering (60-75 DAT) stage and then decreased in all level of added nitrogen. Plant height was highest at harvest stage and It was 13.95 %. 11 .73 % and 16.43 % over control at 120 kg N/ha in BR22, BR23 and Nizersail respectively. Effect of cultivar was significant on plant height. no. of effective tillers/m2, spikelet no./panicle, % filled grain, 1000 grain weight., 'straw and grain yield. Grain yield was highest from BR23 (5.08 t/ha) followed by BR22 (4.59 t/ha). level of N had a Significant influence on all the crop characters under study except 1000 grain weight. The interaction effect of cultivar and N level was significant for effective tiller no.lm2, spikelet no.!panicle, % filled grain and grain yield. Highest grain (6.26 t/ha) and straw yield (8.07 t/ha) was obtained by BR23 with 120 kg N/ha.

Objectives:

The present experiment was undertaken to identify the response nature of photosensitive varieties to added nitrogen and thereby help us manipulating rice production technology for higher grain Yield.

Methodology:

Two modern and one local photosensitive varieties viz. BR22, BR23 and Nlzersail was transplanted in Agronomy field laboratory, BAU, Mymensingh during T. Aman season, 1992. The plot was ploughed well. Phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc fertilizer were applied as per recommendation of BRRI (1991). All the phosphatic, potassIc, sulphur, zinc and one-third of urea fertilizer were applied in each plot at the time of final land preparation and were mixed thoroughly with soil. The rest of the urea was top-dressed in two equal splits. One at active tillering stage and the other at panicle initiation stage at 30 and 55 OAT respectively, The control plots received no nitrogen fertilizer, The experiment was laid :" .out in a split-plot design with four replications In a 5 x 4 sqm plot, spaced at 25 x 15 cm using two seedling/hill. Main plots and subplots were received variety and levels of nitrogen (0, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg N/ha), respectively. Eight hills in each plot were selected and number of tillers/hill were counted at 15 days intervals starting from 15 OAT and continued upto post flowering stage. Ten hills/plot were selected randomly and plant height was measured.

Plant samplings for analysis

Total dry weight: Plant samples were taken randomly at every 15 days and total dry weights (excluding root) were calculated.
Leaf area index: Four randomly selected hills from each plot were harvested at 15 day interval from 15 OAT to post flowering. The total leaf area of a single hill was averaged.

The growth parameters viz. CGR (crop growth rate) and NAR (Net assimilation rate) were computed. Grain yield was measured at maturity by harvesting 5 m² from the centre of each plot from which ten randomly selected hills were used to determine straw Yield and yield components. The data were analysed following standard statistical procedures.
