Multivariate Analysis in Some Genotypes of Radish (raphanus Sativus L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genotypes were grouped into four different clusters. Cluster III was comprised with maximum number of genotypes (ten). The inter-cluster distance was maximum between clusters I and II (26.709) indicating wide genetic diversity between these two clusters followed by the distance between cluster II and III (22.115), cluster II and cluster IV (15.451) and cluster I and cluster IV (11.640). The minimum inter-cluster distance was observed between cluster I and cluster III (4.991) followed by cluster III and cluster IV (6.773) indicating that the genotypes of these clusters were genetically close. The intra cluster distance in the entire four clusters was more or less low indicated the genotypes with in the same cluster were closely related. Among the characters root length, plant height and leaf length contributed most for divergence in the studied genotypes.

Objectives:

The study was conducted to estimate the nature and magnitude of genetic divergence and characters contributing to the genetic divergence of twenty one radish genotypes. This study will help in selection of more distantly related genotypes to select early, high yielding and year round variety of radish and this could be useful for future radish breeding program.

Methodology:

Experimental material was consisted of twenty one genotypes of radish collected from different location of Bangladesh, India and China. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block (RCB) Design with three replications. The plot size was 2m x 1.5 m with seven rows per plot. The distance between rows was 40 cm and between plants was 20 cm. Data were recorded on plant height (cm), days to harvest, root length (cm), root diameter (cm), leaf length (cm), leaf diameter (cm) and root yield (g). Fertilizers were applied at rate of 100, 80, 60, 40, 5 and 4 kg per acre of Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate and Borax, respectively. All the fertilizer except urea was applied during the land preparation. Urea was top dressed at 10-15 days and 25-30 days of seed sowing. Mean data of each character was subjected to multivariate analysis viz, Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCO) Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Cluster Analysis and Canonical Variate Analysis using GENSTAT 513 (Mahalanobis, 1936; Digby et al., 1989 and Jager et al., 1983).

Achievement/Findings:

The performance and heterosis of hybrids are associated with genetic divergence between their parental lines. Diverse genetic origin between the parental lines enhances possibility for maximum heterosis. Selection of genotypes based on diversity will help making promising test hybrids and upon seed production feasibility potential radish hybrid will come up.
