Oviposition Behaviour of Apanteles Obliquae Wilk. and Its Parasitism on Spllarctia Obliqua (walk.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Experiments were conducted to study the oviposition behaviour and parasitism of Apanteles obljquae on jute hairy caterpillar, Spilarctia (=Spilosoma) obliqua in the laboratory under temperature and relative humidity, 20-27°C and 65- 75%, respectively. During oviposition, the parasitoid demonstrated 10 steps and preferred to oviposit in the lateral abdominal region of the 2nd instar larva of the host. It was found that eggs laid by unmated females produced only male progenies while mated females produced both male and female progeny in a ratio of 1:1.41. From mated parasitoid on an average 17.6 larvae came out from one 4th instar host larva and 13.8 from unmated parasitoid. The mean parasitism rate of A. obliquae was 51.45% while there was no host food and this rate decreased to 40.8% with host food.

Objectives:

To study the oviposition behaviour and parasitism of Apanteles obljquae on jute hairy caterpillar, Spilarctia (=Spilosoma) obliqua in the laboratory under temperature and relative humidity.

Methodology:

Experiments on the oviposition behaviour and parasitism of A. obliquae were conducted in the laboratory, Department of Entomology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh under room temperature ranges from 20-27°C and relative humidity 65-75%. Oviposition behaviour of A. obliquae: The mated female parasitoid was allowed to oviposition 2nd instar larvae of S. obliqua in a 100 ml beaker having two larvae in each. The top of the beaker was covered with mosquito net fixed with a rubber band. The oviposition behaviour was observed visually with care for four hours. During and after oviposition the activity and movement of the parasitoid and the host larvae were observed carefully with the help of a magnifying glass. Five female parasitoids were observed. Parasithim rate of A. obliquae: Immediately after emergence adults were sexed and kept in pairs in the glass jar for mating. After 24 hours, mated females were transferred individually into small beakers having 40 2nd instar larvae of S. obiiqua in each beaker. Parasitoids were allowed to oviposit for 10 hours with and without host f'ood (jute leaves). Ten females were studied for each case. Afterwards each batch of larvae was reared separately in petridishes and total number of larvae parasitized by each female parasitoid was recorded. Statistical analysis: To compare between the differences of two means of developmental stages the following formulae were used.

Achievement/Findings:

The process of moulting and pupation is under hormonal control of the body and accumulation of certain nutritive reserve. As parasitized larvae consumed less food, it would have required longer time to accumulate the nutritive reserve for moulting.
