Tillage Effects on Wetland Rice Yields in Two Different Soils of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two field experiment was conducted in the Boro and transplanted Aman (T. Aman) seasons of 1990 on loam and silt loam soils of the BRRI Regional Statioms, Comilla and Rajshahi, respectively. three tillage treatments, minimum tillage, dry opening and conservational tillage were tested in randomized complete block design. The test varieties were BRRI dhan30 and BR14 in Boro at Comilla and Rajshahi, respectively and BR11 in T. Aman at both the sites. In the Boro season, no significant difference in yield was observed due to tillage treatments at Comilla. However, significantly higher grain yield was obtained from the conventional puddled field at Rajshahi compared to other treatments. in the T. Aman season, tillage treatments did not show significant effect on grain yield in any location.

Objectives:

To find out the tillage effect on wetland rice in two soils with different physical properties.

Methodology:

Two field experiments were conducted in the Boro and transplanted Aman (T. Aman) seasons of 1990. The experiments were done at the BRRI Regional Statioms, Comilla and Rajshahi, respectively. The soil texture were loam and silt loam BRRI Regional Statioms, Comilla and Rajshahi, respectively. Soil samples (0-30 cm) were collected for determining physical, and physicochemical properties before tillage treatments were applied. Three tillage treatments were: i) minimum tillage: the plots were submerged in water 3 days before transplanting. at Rajshahi, a shallow spading was done but in Comilla, single laddering was done prior to transplanting; ii) dry opening: spading was done in dry soil followed by a 3-day submergence ; iii) conventional puddling: the plots were submerged for a day and was puddled by 5 ploughings followed by laddering in 2 days. The design followed was a randomized complete block design. with three replications. The plot size was 40m²for Comilla and 60 m²for Rajshahi. In Boro, 44-days old seedlings of BRRI dhan30 and 61-days old seedlings of BR14 were transplanted at Comilla and Rajshahi respectively. Three or four seedlings/hill were transplanted at 20 cm spacing. In T. Aman BR11 was the testing variety. All plots received basal applications of 40-25-35-10 kg/ha of NPKS followed by two top dressing of 40 kg N/ha at 30 days after transplanting (DAT) and 45 DAT. Hand weeding was done at 15 and 30 DAT. Grain and straw yields were recorded from 5 m² area and tiller and panicle/m² were recorded from 16 hills at harvest.

Achievement/Findings:

Results of this experiments indicates that proper weed control may produce similar grain yield from wetland rice with minimum tillage aa with conventional puddling. However, more research is needed to identify soils where minimum tillage can be practiced instead of conventional puddling.
