Objectives:

Objectives of the study was to determine-

A suitable rice sowing technique by manipulating steeping, hatching of seed and puddling of soil and
suitable varieties and techniques of rice cultivation by the broadcasting method.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the BRRI Farm, Gazipur during T. Aman season in 1995 to determine a suitable rice sowing technique by manipulating steeping, hatching of seed and puddling of soil and suitable varieties and techniques of rice cultivation by the broadcasting method. The experiment was comprised of three sowing methods, Viz., i) no steeping = no hatching +sown irrigated puddled soil, ii) 12 h steeping + 12 h Hatching + sown in unpuddled flood irrigated ploughed soil, and iii) 24-h steeping + 24-h hacthing (sprouted seed) + sown in unirrigated ploughed soil and BR22 and BR23 were used as testing rice variety. Irrigation was done carefully in the respective plots during land preparation through the institute"s irrigation system. The land puddled manually after the required irrigation in the respective plots. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design with three replication in the well-prepared plots and 70 kg/ha seed sown in the unit plot of 10 m² . Each variety were combinations with different sowing methods were placed randomly in the unit plots within a block steeped and hatched in time to adjust the sowing time according to the experimental treatments, fertilized with 80-60-40-20-20kg NPKSZn/ha. All fertilizers excepting urea were applied in the plots during final land preparation. Urea was applied in three splits at 15, 30, 40 DAS and weeded at 14,29, and 39 DAS followed by irrigation. The crop was harvested plot wise at 80% maturity on different dates, depending on the maturity of the crop. The characters studied were taken from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot. The grain yield of the unit plot was measured at 14% moisture content and converted into ton per hectare.

Achievement/Findings:

BR22 performed better than BR23. Among the sowing methods, 12-h steeping + 12-h hatching and sown in flooded irrigated ploughed soil showed superior performances. The effect of BR22 x 12-h steeping + 12-h hatching x sown in irrigated puddled soil found better in producing tillers/hill and grain yield which could be adopted for the sowing technique for T, Aman rice cultivation.
