Performance of Turmeric Under the Niche of Mango Orchard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at Farming Systems Research and Development (FSRD) site, Pushpopara, Pabna during 2014-15 to evaluate the performance of BARI released turmeric varieties under the niche of mango orchard. Both BARI Halud 4 and BARI Halud 5 showed better performance over local turmeric variety (Arani) tested in mango orchard. Although the yield was lower in BARI halud 3, but the demand was higher due to its attractive yellow color.

Objectives:

1. To assess the performance of BARI released turmeric varieties under the niche of mango orchard

2) To increase crop production and farmers’ income.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Farming Systems Research and Development (FSRD) site, Pushpopara, Pabna (N= 24?01′938″, E= 089?20′117″), during 2014-15 under AEZ-11. Four turmeric varieties viz. BARI Halud3, BARI Halud4, BARI Halud5 and Local were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications under mango orchard. The unit plot size was 5 m x 4 m. The crops were fertilized as per FRG’2012. The seeds of turmeric were sown on 6 May, 2014 maintaining 50 x 25 cm² spacing. Irrigation and other intercultural operation and plant protection measures were taken as and when necessary. Turmeric was harvested on January 12, 2015. All necessary data were collected and analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

From the experimentation, it can be concluded that the tested BARI varieties of turmeric showed better performance regarding yield and yield attributes grown in mango orchard. BARI developed turmeric varieties showed excellent performance over the local one tested in mango orchard. BARI Halud4 and BARI Halud5 exhibited satisfactory yield as well as economic return from the experimentation. Though the performance of mango plants have not been studied in this experiment but cultivation of turmeric in mango orchard has put an additional value and economic return to the farmers. There after an intensive investigation is necessary to generate more information for successful crop production in orchards with a view to increase production and farmers income.
