Characterization of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

One hundred accessions of lentil were taken for characterization. Eight qualitative and nine quantitative characteristics were studied. Qualitative variations where predominantly present in all characters except leaf pubescence and pod shedding. In case of quantitative characters, the first female flower initiation was found earlier (68 days) in 84% of the accessions. The highest seed weight per plant (8.40(g) was recorded from BD-3885 while the lowest (0.80g/plant) was observed in BD- 3822.The hundred seed weight (67g) was found in BD-10093 and the lower was found in BD- 3881(0.12g). The highest CV% was found in days to 50% flowering (50.1) followed by 100 seed weight (39.46) and the lowest CV% in number of seed per pod.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Genetic Resources Center, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the rabi season 2013 - 14. The experiment was laid out in non-replication method. Unit plot size was 4m x 1m and seeds were sown in rows with spacing 40 cm. The seeds were sown on 18 November, 2013. Fungicide, insecticide and other intercultural operations were applied as and when necessary. Five plants were selected randomly from three rows of each accession. Data were recorded on seedling stem pigmentation, leaf pubescence, leaflet size, flower ground colour, tendril length, pod pigmentation, pod shedding, seed colour, days to 1^stflowering, days to 50% flowering, number of seeds per peduncle, number of seed per pod, plant height, days to maturity, days to harvest, seed weight per plant, and 100 seed weight. Data were analyzed statistically by computer.
