A study was carried out to find out the biotypic variation in natural brown planthopper (BPH) populations, collected form four different regions of Bangladesh. In general. insects fed on the susceptible rice varieties excreted more honeydews than those fed on the non-susceptible ones. Honeydew droplets collected on bromocresol green solution treated filter paper were significantly larger for the susceptible varieties (TN1, Mudgo and ASD7) than those in case of the resistant varieties (T27A, ARC10550. Swarnalata). A large populations of the BPH was found to develop on the susceptible varieties like Mudgo, ASD7 and TN1. ARC10550 and T27A had the smallest populations. Swarnalata was exception in population development. The varieties reacted differentially to BPH depending on their resistance or susceptibility to the insect. However, none of the tests indicated any appreciable differences in behaviour among the BPH populations collected from four different locations, The observed non-specificity in the tests suggested that biotypic variation in the BPH populations tested has not yet been developed in Bangladesh.

  • The present experiment was set up to study the biotypic variations of BPH if exists in Bangladesh. Information on the present status of the local BPH population will be useful for the rice breeders of Bangladesh.
Gravid adult females of BPH were collected from infested rice fields of Cox's Bazar, Satkhira, Natore and from BRRI greenhouse, They were reared separately on 45-50 day old BR3 rice plants grown previously in earthen pots kept inside rearing cages (45 X 45 X 81.5crn  size) in the greenhouse of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur. TheInsects were allowed to lay eggs on the rice plants for 2 days. Then the plants with eggs of BPH were transferred in other cages where the eggs were allowed to hatch. All the cages weer supplied with new rice plants once every 2 days for the development and increase in numbers of BPH. Later on these insects, collected from different locations and reared separately were used for different tests. Eight rice varieties, six differentials (Mud go, ASD7, Kuruhondarawala. Hotel Samba, ARC 10550 and Swaranalata) having different genes for resistance to different biotypes and two checks (TN 1- susceptible and T27A- resistant to all the biotypes) were used for the studies. Bromocresol green treated (yellow orange) filter papers (9 em diameter) prepared previously by repeated dipping and drying alternately for one hour, having holes at the centre(as the cardboard) were placed on those cardboards. Each .filter paper was marked by pencil to indicate tile variety and ,the BPH population used. The filter papers were handled carefully Witt. forceps to that no moisture could come in contact with them. Moreover, to avoid the possibility at moisture coming in contact with the filter papers from the cardboard, polythene sheets (10 X 10) having holes at the centre were placed in between the boards and the filter papers. Finally, conical mylar cups (6 cm dia. at the border end and a small hole at the top) were placed on the filter, papers in such a way that single tiller of each pot passed through the holes. The cups acted as: special confinement for the BPH. Five 4- days old female adults, starved for 3 hours were released into each cup to feed on the tiller. After 24 hours. the filter papers with the blue stains on them, caused by honeydew droplets secreted by the BPH, were collected. The honeydew contained amino acids (excreted by BPH) which produced blue spots on bromocresol treated filter papers. The sizes of blue stains on each filter paper were measured (mm2) and tabulated against each variety,. The same procedure was followed for each population of BPH. Thirty five days old plants of all the test Varieties, previously grown singly in earthen posts (16 x 20 cm) were used for this experiment. After cleaning base of the tillers, each plant was enclosed in a mylar film cage (13 em diameter and 90 em In height). The top open end and 2 windows of each mylar cage were kept closed by nylon nets. Each individual plant was marked by a label stick, The pots 1121'.'ll 1gtile plants enclosed by mylar cages were placed in large galvanized iron trays (200 x 90 x 15 em), filled Witt] water to provide necessary water to plants and humid microclimate for BPH development.
