Performance of Intercropping of Short Duration Leafy Vegetables with Elephant Yam in the Coastal Area of Satkhira

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out at the MLT site, Satkhira during 2014-15 to observe the feasibility of inter cropping of short duration leafy vegetables with elephant yam in Satkhira. Five inter cropping combinations were investigated as T₁: Sole elephant yam, T₂: Elephant yam+Sabuj shak, T₃: Elephant yam+Red amaranth, T₄: Elephant yam+ Indian spinach, T₅: Elephant yam+Kangkong with three replications. The highest yield (22.18 t/ha) was recorded from T₁, sole elephant yam cropping and the highest elephant yam equivalent yield (30.40 t/ha) was obtained from T₄ where sabuj shak was inter cropped with elephant yam.

Objectives:

To study the feasibility and agro-economic performance of inter cropping different short duration vegetables with elephant yam.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the MLT site, Satkhira during 2014-15 to find out the suitable vegetable crops for inter cropping with elephant yam in the agro-ecological condition of Satkhira. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications. Five inter cropping combinations were investigated as T₁: Sole elephant yam, T₂: Elephant yam+Sabuj shak, T₃: Elephant yam+Red amaranth, T4: Elephant yam+Indian spinach, T₅: Elephant yam+Kangkong. The variety of elephant yam, sabuj shak, red amaranth and kangkong were local, local, BARI Red amaranth-1 and BARI Kangkong-1, respectively. The unit plot size was 3 × 3 m². The experimental plot was fertilized with 138-60-75-27 kg/ha of N-P-K-S in the form of urea, TSP. MOP, gypsum, respectively and 10 ton cow dung/ha. The full dose of P, S, cow dung and one-third of N and K were applied during final land preparation. The rest of N and K were applied in two equal installments as side dressing after 30 and 60 DAP. Tubers of elephant yam were sown on 19 May, 2014. Seeds of sabuj shak, red amaranth Indian spinach and kangkong were sown also on the same date. The land was irrigated three times. No severe pests and diseases were observed. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Sabuj shak, red amaranth and kangkong were harvested on second week of June, Indian spinach and kangkong (second cut) were harvested last week of June and elephant yam was harvested on 27 August, 2014. All the necessary data were collected and statistically analyzed by using the programme MSTAT-C. The mean comparison was done by LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:

In this experiment inter cropping is more profitable than sole cropping. However, this is the first year result of the experiment.
