Production of Improved Turmeric and Ginger in the Homestead During 2011-12

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Turmeric and ginger play important role in the diet of Bangladeshi people. But the domestic production of these two spices is not sufficient to meet the demand of the people. As a result, a lot of these spices are imported every year from other countries. To reduce dependency on import of these two spices need to bring more land under cultivation. But this is not possible because of land limitation. One avenue of increasing their production is the cultivation of turmeric and ginger in homestead area especially in partially shady areas. With this view, farmer's participatory production demonstration trials on turmeric and ginger were undertaken with small farmers at FSR&D site, Moison, Kapasia. Production and economics of turmeric and ginger showed that 31.6 kg turmeric and 4.2 kg ginger were produced from average homestead area of 38.6 m² and 5.0 m², respectively and gross margins were Tk. 748 and 152, respectively.

Objectives:

To create awareness among farmers in growing turmeric and ginger in unused and or shady places of the homesteads
To assess economics of turmeric and ginger production

Methodology:

Increasing production of turmeric and ginger in homestead area especially in partially shady areas, demonstration trials on turmeric and ginger were undertaken with small farmers at FSR&D site, Moison, Kapasia.The trials were conducted during the period of 15 April 2011 to 23 March 2012. Three farmers of small farm category were selected for these spices cultivation. Prior to start of activities, the participatory farmers took part in training on the production package of the spices. Turmeric and ginger were planted at a spacing of 50×25 cm using 2.5 tons/ha seed. BRRI scientists provided technical assistance to the farmers and all other cultural and management practices were done by the farmers. Crops were harvested at full maturity.
