Environment and Livelihood Development Through Late Jute Seed Production in Agroforestry Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in the selected 3 sites of Rangpur, Dinajpur and Faridpur. Benchmark survey of the selected areas was completed and compared with the results derived at the end of the study. Scheduled completion of jute seed production experiments in the farmer’s homesteads and orchards based agro forestry systems were conducted. All of the indicators assessed through the environmental matrix (Pre- and Post-Evaluation) showed better results at post-project implementation. Field days for creating awareness and capacity building for the farmers and practical training programs on late jute seed production techniques in agro forestry environment, jute seed processing packaging and storing were arranged for the interested jute seed producers, local unemployed educated young people to enhance the jute seed trading activities in the areas. Those programs created opportunities and awareness to the locals both jute fibre /seed producers and unemployed young generation. Soil samples of the land before and after the production of late jute seed crop were tested in the Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI) laboratories. Improvement of soil was observed from sample test results. Indirect Environmental and Ecological analysis (with secondary data) were conducted using 2 modern studies of EMERY analysis and LCA (Life Cycle Assessment). Results revealed that the jute seed production process is ecological sustainable and environment friendly (even more environment friendly than the similar production process in neighboring countries).

Objectives:

1. To evaluate the ecological sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study.

2. To evaluate the environmental consistencies of jute seed production system.

Methodology:

In the field 3 types of experiments at farmers (i) homestead, (ii) early stages of established orchard plantation and (iii) newly developed orchard plantation for jute seed production practices were studied. Laboratory tests of soil sample from the selected land for late jute seed production before seed sowing and after harvesting the seed crop was conducted at the nearby SRDI laboratories. In farmers homestead and orchard plantation only the portion of available land where sunshine was present some portion of the day time hours were selected for jute seed cultivation. Plantation of quick growing valuable trees were suggested for fallow land with maintaining sufficient plant to plant distances (4 to 10m depending on the species and saplings age) within which jute seed crop was cultivated in sufficient solar radiation.

Achievement/Findings:

Late jute seed production in the agro forestry systems at farmers homestead and orchard plantations is a beneficiary production system to the farmers. It also enriches the soil and environment with a sustainable manner. It is a fruitful alternative source of income for the local educated unemployed young peoples.
