Physiological Analysis of Delayed Sowing on Yield of Rape Seed (brassica Campestris L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of delayed sowing on growth, development and yield of six cultivars of rape seed (Brassica campestris L.) were studied. Sowing dates had significant effects on most of the growth characteristics, yield and yield components. Leaf area index (LAI) and top dry weight per unit ground area were higher in the first sowing at all growth stages studied. Generally, relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) at both pre-flowering and post-lowering stages were higher in the third sowing (16 November). Time taken to first flowering, plant height, leaf number, leaf area and top dry weight at first flowering reduced with delayed sowing. Therefore, delayed sowing limits the size of plants which in turn limits their productivity. Seed yield was positively correlated with the number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, seed weight and harvest index at all the three sowings.

Objectives:

To study the effects of delayed sowing on growth pattern which ultimately affects yield in rape seed.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the field at the Rajshahi University, Bangladesh during the winter of 1983-84. Seeds of six cultivars of Brassica October, 6 and 16 November, 1983. The experiment was carried out using the split-plot design with 3 replications. Sowing dates constituted the main plots and cultivars the sub-plots. In each replication, four rows of 5m each were allotted for each cultivar. The distance between the rows was 30 cm and between plants was approximately 10 cm. The plots were irrigated three times during the entire growing season. The plants were sprayed with melathione for the control of aphids. The time taken to first flowering, plant height, leaf number, leaf area and dry matter weights of plants were determined at first flowering. For growth analysis, the plants were harvested first 18 days after sowing and thereafter with an interval of 7 days under each sowing date. At each harvest, the plants were cut off just below the cotyledone node and the plant parts were separated into leaves, petioles, stems, and flowers and/or pods when present. The plant parts were oven dried at 90°C for 24^th before weighing and the different growth parameters were calculated according to Radford, 1967. The number of flowers that opened daily was recorded and from the final number of pods the percentage of' pod abortion was calculated. At the final harvest the following data were recorded: number of primary branches, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, plant dry weight, 1000-seed weight and seed yield. Harvest index (H.l.) was calculated as follows: Harvest index (%) =(Seed yield/Total dry weight) x 100. Oil content of the seeds was determined by the Soxhlet method using petroleum ethar (40-60°C) as the solvent. The data were analyzed statistically.

Achievement/Findings:

A desirable crop of late-sown rape seed would be that which grows to a large size before flowering, but then produce a canopy of few flowers and pods, within which radiation should be well-distributed and reserves readily available allowing each pod to retain close to the potential number of seeds. A less dense pod should also allow leaves to persist longer and make a greater contribution to the post-flowering assimilate supply.The number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, seed weight and harvest index contributed most to seed yield and selection for these characters would be worthwhile.
