A field experiment was carried out at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh to determine the effects of transplanting dates on growth and yield of rice varieties grown in rainfed season, 2011. The growth and yield of two inbred (BR11-Mukta and BRRI dhan39) and two hybrid varieties (ACI 1 and ACI Shera) were evaluated at four transplanting dates, (at 15 day intervals, 20 July to 3 September). Varietal effect were significant based on all the recorded agronomic parameters whereas, transplanting date had little effects on  panicle length, grain yield, straw yield, biological yield and harvest index. Combined effect showed significant variation among tested rice genotypes except number of total tillers m-2  at 90 DAT, leaf area index (LAI) at 15 and 30 DAT, number of effective and non effective tillers, panicle length and harvest index. Among the four transplanting date 4th August produced highest plant biomass and yield for all tested varieties. Inbreed variety BR11 produced highest maximum number of effective tiller 502.70 m-2 , grain yield (6.57 t ha-1), and straw yield (7.68 t ha-1) yield followed by the hybrid variety ACI1. The hybrid variety ACI Shera transplanted on 4th of August resulted in 10 days of early flowering, 12.5 days less time for maturity. The lowest performance in terms of morphological and yield contributory characteristics, except harvest index, was recorded by the hybrid variety ACI Shera planted on the 3rd of September.  It can be concluded that among the tested varieties BR11 performed better in terms of grain yield and 4th of August is the best time for transplanting inbreed and hybrid rainfed Aman varieties.

To determine the effects of transplanting dates on growth and yield of rice varieties grown in rainfed season

The experiment was conducted at the research field of the Department of Agronomy, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The experiment consisted of 4 rice varieties (Two inbred varieties, viz. BR11 and BRRI dhan39, and two hybrid varieties, viz. ACI 1 and ACI Shera) and 4 transplanting dates (20th July, 4th August, 19th August and 3rd September). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each plot was 4.0 by 3.0 m. Selected inbred and hybrid varieties of rice seeds were sown in a nursery seedbed for 30 days before transplanting. The experimental plots were fertilized with 120, 80, 80, 20 and 5 kg ha-1 of N, P2O5, K2O, S and Zn in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP), gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. The entire amount of triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate was applied as a basal dose at final land preparation. Urea was top-dressed in three equal installments, i.e. after seedling recovery, during the vegetative stage and at 7 days before panicle initiation. Seeds of each inbred and hybrid cultivars were sown from June to July, 2010 in nursery beds and 30-day-old seedlings were transplanted on the 20th July, 4th August, 19th August and 3rd September into the experimental plots. Seedlings were transplanted as per BRRI and ACI recommendations. After transplanting the seedlings, gap filling and other inter-cultural operations were carried out if and when necessary. The crop was harvested when 80-90% of the grains had become golden yellow in color. The harvesting of inbred varieties BRRI dhan39 and BR11 were done on January 23 and January 26, respectively. The hybrid varieties ACI 1 and ACI Shera were harvested on February 02 and February 11. One m-2 area from the middle portion of each plot was separately harvested for grain and straw yield. Threshing was carried out using a pedal thresher. The grains were cleaned and sun-dried to a moisture content of 12%. The straw was oven dried. Finally grain and straw yields plot-1 were determined on an oven dry basis and converted to t ha-1. Experimental data such as plant height, number of tillers per hill, leaf area index, and plant biomass were recorded at 15 days interval after transplanting, and continued till harvest. Days to flowering was recorded when 50% of the plants within a plot produced flowers. Agronomic characters were based on 10 selected hills from each plot in the field at 15- day interval and at harvest. Statistical Analysis  All data were analyzed following the analysis of variance procedure using the MSTAT-C package and mean differences were compared by Least Significance Difference at 5% Level of Significance (Gomez and Gomez 1984).

Effect of variety was significant on all the morphological and yield characteristics, except harvest index. The different transplanting dates did not show significant variation on the panicle length, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index, while all other characters showed significant differences. From the above results it could be concluded that the high yielding inbred variety BR11 (Mukta) in the 4th August transplanting both individually and also in combination produced better results compared to the other varieties and transplanting dates with respect to morpho-physiological and yield contributing characters of the assigned inbred and hybrid rice genotypes. Based on the above observations the 4th  August transplanting ensured maximum growth and yield with the inbred variety BR11 (Mukta) in the rainfed season. Thus, the 4th August transplanting for BR11 (Mukta) was found to be the optimum transplanting time for maximum yield in the rainfed season.
