Late jute seed production technique was applied to the farmers (i) homestead areas and (ii) early stages of orchard plantation. Both white (cv. CVL-1) and tossa (cv. O-9897 and cv. O-72) varieties were used with recommended cultivation practices (recommended fertilizer and intercultural operations for normal seed production at late season). Few farmers inter cropped jute seed crop with vegetables in their kitchen garden also. In farmers homestead areas 2.70 kg of jute seed per decimal and 1.79 kg of quality jute seed on an average of 3 years at both homestead and early stage of orchard plantation areas were produced. Economically farmers were benefited with late jute seed production in both homestead and early stages of orchard plantation, but late jute seed production in early stages of orchard plantation were more profitable.

To determine the jute seed production in the farmers homestead and early stage of orchard plantations at late season.

In the field experimentation 2 types of land at farmers homestead and early stages of orchard plantation were considered for late jute seed production practices developed by Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI). In farmers homestead only the portion of available land where sufficient sunshine was present some portion of the day time hours were selected for late jute seed cultivation. In the early stage of orchard plantation with partially open canopy were selected for jute seed production at late season. Similarly plantation of quick growing valuable trees were suggested for fallow land with maintaining sufficient plant to plant distances within which late jute seed crop could be cultivated. Three cultivars of two varieties of jute, Corchorus capsularis and Corchorus olitorius were selected for late jute seed production technique depending on the farmer’s choice. Farmers homestead area where sufficient amount of solar radiation was available for some portion of the day was selected for jute seed production process with or without inter cropping other vegetables/crops. Required inputs with technologies were provided to the farmers for the BJRI quality late jute seed production process. All the information of land area, type of soil with fertility and soil moisture status, cost and amount of seed produced with the growth of plant species were recorded for data analysis and reporting. In early stages of orchard plantation jute seed crop was introduced with inter cropping or as a sole crop in the selected orchards. Technologies with necessary inputs were supplied to the farmers. Soil fertility status and moisture content of the selected area were measured. Farmers were supported with necessary information for better late jute seed crop as well as feedback information and data were collected time to time through field visit. All the information of land area, type of soil with fertility, soil moisture status, cost, amount and quality of seed produced were recorded . Prices of produced seed, jute by-product, growth of plant and biomass were recorded. Late jute seed was sown in farmers homestead and orchards in 15 August to 15 September in the late jute seed production season at Rangpur, Dinajpur and Faridpur sites. Trained farmers with modern efficient management for good seed yield as well as environmental awareness and supported with the input and technology for the quick growing valuable plantation and production of quality Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) developed jute seed in their homestead, orchards and pond banks wherever free spaces were available. Finally information exchange and data were collected at regular interval from 20 selected farmers from each of the 3 sites. Laboratory tests of seed samples from the produced jute seed in agro forestry systems at selected 20 farmers from each of the 3 sites were tested in the seed pathological laboratory of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute for harmful insects and pathogens to be assured the quality of produced seed. Fibre crop yield performance studies of the seed produced in the agro forestry systems were conducted in the 3 sites of the project taking seed produced in normal way i.e., TLS as control and designed in RCBD.

The program was executed in the late jute production season at farmers homestead and early stage of orchard plantation in Rangpur, Dinajpur and Faridpur region to introduce the BJRI developed late jute seed production technology in farmer’s homestead and orchard based agroforestry systems to made them self sufficient in jute seed production as well as economically benefited. On an average 2 to 3 kg of quality jute seed (germination more than 80%) was obtained from a decimal of land which covers more than an acre of land for jute fibre cultivation.
