Developmental Pattern and Quality of Mungbean (vigna Radja Ta L. Wilczek) Seeds in Relation to Nodal Position and Harvest Frequency

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The extent or variation in pod development, seed size and germinability in relation to harvesting time and the position or pods on the mungbean plant were studied. Plants were grown in pots under semi-controlled environment and pods were tagged to monitor maturity and seed characteristics. Pods were harvested at four installments and for each individual pod, seeds were processed separately. Majority of pods were harvested in two mid-harvests. An average plant developed 10 nodes. The contribution of two lowermost nodes in seed yield was negligibly small. Over 53% of total pods were on nodes 3-5. Number of seeds per pod remained nearly uniform throughout excepting those in pods on the terminal node. Harvest frequency had little effect on the germination of seeds.

Objectives:

To display the extent of variation in pod development, seed size and quality over the growing season in relation to nodal position and harvesting time.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the Seed Research Section of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur during the wet season of 1989. Twenty earthen pots were filled up with silty clay soil up to the rim and fertilizers at 50, 44 and 40 mg or N, P and K per pot, respectively were incorporated into the soil. Half of N and whole of P and K were applied immediately prior to sowing. Remaining half of N was top dressed 20 days after seedling emergence (DAE). Mungbean seeds (cv. MB 7703) were sown on August 18. Ten days after emergence two seedlings per pot were retained. To keep the aphid infestation to a minimum, insecticide was sprayed at 35 DAE. Out of 20 pots. ten pots were randomly selected for data collection. Mature pods developed on different nodal positions were harvested at four installments corresponding to 62, 69, 79 and 83 DAE. For node we refer to cohort of stem, receme and branch adjoining the node. Seeds of individual pods were processed separately and data on number of pods per node, pod length, seeds per pod, seed size and the germination behaviour of seeds according to nodal position were recorded. Seeds thus obtained from different nodal positions and at four successive harvests were subjected to germination tests. Statistical analysis of each of the parameters were carried out for drawing conclusion.
