A field experiment was carried out at Madaripur sadar and Shibchar charland areas in Madaripur districts under Low Ganges River Floodplain soils (AEZ-12) during 2011-12 and 2012-13 to find out adaptable high yielding variety of lentil for charland areas. BARI Masur-1, BARI Masur-2, BARI Masur-3, BARI Masur-4, BARI Masur-5 and BARI Masur-6 were selected for the experiment. The trial was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The blanket dose of N20P30 K20S10Zn2.0B1.0 kg ha-1 was applied.  The sources of fertilizers were urea, TSP, MoP, zypsum, zinc sulphate, borax, respectively as blanket. All fertilizers were applied after final land preparation. Among the varieties, BARI Masur-6 gave the highest grain yield (1286 kg ha-1) in Madaripur Sadar and (1265 kg ha-1) in Shibchar during 2011-12 to 2012-13, respectively. In both the locations and years, grain yield increased due to increase number of pods per plant and 1000 grain weight. The highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) was counted in BARI Masur-6 at both Madaripur sadar and Shibchar. The lowest grain yield was recorded in BARI Masur-3 at Madaripur sadar and in BARI Masur-2 at Shibchar during 2012-13. So, the BARI Masur-6 may be considered for new created fertile charland as suitable variety of lentil in Bangladesh.

The objective of the study was to find out the better and adaptable HYV of lentil for charland areas of Madaripur

A field experiment was carried out at Madaripur sadar (Pachkhola) and Shibchar (Charsamail) charland areas in Madaripur districts during 2011-12 and 2012-13. Soil belongs to Low Ganges River Floodplain (AEZ-12). Objective of the trial to find out the adaptable HYV of lentil for charland areas of the district. Flood water creates alluvial layer of soil in every year. This new soil is fertile. Initial soil samples (0-15 cm depth) were collected from experimental field and dried in the air   through passing a 2-mm sieve and analyzed their physical and chemical properties following standard methods. The sample soil of Madaripur sadar was loamy in texture having 1.25%  organic matter (OM), 0.076% N, 17 µg g-1  P , 0.14 meq.100 g-1 K, 20 µg g-1  S, 10.1 meq.100 g-1 Ca, 3.2 meq.100 g-1 Mg,  0.69 µg g-1 Zn and 0.14 µg g-1  B. The soil pH was measured to be 7.1. The initial soil of Shibchar was silt loam in texture having 1.15%  organic matter (OM), 0.069% N, 16 µg g-1  P , 0.13 meq.100 g-1 K, 18 µg g-1  S, 10.2 meq.100 g-1 Ca, 3.3 meq.100 g-1 Mg,  0.65 µg g-1 Zn and 0.15 µg g-1  B. The soil pH was measured 7.0. Six BARI released varieties of lentil viz. BARI Masur-1, BARI Masur-2, BARI Masur-3, BARI Masur-4, BARI Masur-5 and BARI Masur-6 were used for the trial. The trial was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The blanket dose of N20P30K20 S10Zn2.0B1.0 kg ha-1 was applied after final land preparation. The source of nutrients were urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and borax, respectively. Unit plot size was 4 m × 3.2 m with spacing of 30 cm × 05 cm. Seeds (30 kg ha-1) were sown on 20 November 2011 and 24 November 2012 at Madaripur sadar and 21 November 2011 and 25 November 2012 at Shibchar. Two weeding were done on 20 DAS and 38 DAS in the trial. Four sprays with fungicide (Rovral), first spray was done on 45 DAS and second, thired and 4th sprays were done within 10 days interval and one spray with insecticide (Karate) were done on 45 DAS in lentil at both the locations. The crop was harvested after maturity. After harvest, the grains were separated from stover by threshing, cleaned, dried and weighed. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield (kg ha-1) were recorded from whole plot and analyzed statistically through MSTAT-C. The cost & return analysis and benefit cost ratio (BCR) was counted on the basis of total expenditure of the respective variety along with the total return from that particular variety. Variety wise management cost was calculated by adding the cost incurred for labours and inputs for each treatment. Total yield of each variety was converted to yield (kg ha-1). This yield was utilized to calculate the gross return. It was measured by multiplying the total yield by the unit price of lentil at that time. Net return was calculated by subtracting management cost from gross return.

Char land areas of Bangladesh are generally fertile due to flood water creates alluvial layer in soil in every year. So, six BARI released varieties of lentil were evaluated for their performance and adaptableness due to grain yield under the natural char conditions. The varieties of lentil showed significant variation in plant height (cm), number of pods plant-1 and number of grains pod-1, 1000-grain wt. and grain yield (kg ha-1). Among the six lentil varieties BARI Masur-6 showed better performance in plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod and grain yield. It is concluded that BARI Masur-6 gave the highest grain yield at both Madaripur sadar and Shibchar. The gross margin and BCR for BARI Masur-6 are higher than other lentil varieties tested at both locations. Therefore, BARI Masur-6 is suitable for the farmers of char land areas of Bangladesh.
