Performance of Different Fruit Under Multi Strata Cropping System

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at Fruit Research Farm of HRC, BARI Gazipur in order to find out the suitable fruit species under the shade of coconut orchard to maximize the production from a piece of land at the same time. Four treatments were included in this study i.e. i. Pineapple+Guava var. BARI Guava-2 ii. Pineapple+Burmese Grape var. BARI lotkon-1 iii. Pineapple+Lime var. BARI lebu-3 and iv. Pineapple+Litchi var. BARI Litchu-3. The experiment was started on June 2013 and no fruit was harvested yet including coconut. Growth of guava plants seems to be quicker compared to those of other fruit species. The highest plant height (237 cm) and canopy spread 157 cm (N-S) and 154 cm (E-W) were recorded from the guava plants. Early flowering (mid April 2014) was observed in the guava plants.

Objectives:

To developing multi-strata fruit garden with different combinations of fruit species in order to increase the farm income as well as year round production.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Fruit Farm of Horticulture Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during July 2013 to June 2014. Permanent Orchard of coconut (Age 15-25 years) was used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with 3 replications. The treatments were; sole coconut; Pineapple+Guava var. BARI Guava-2; Pineapple+Burmese Grape var. BARI lotkon-1, Pineapple+Lemon var. BARI Lebu-3, Pineapple+Litchi var. BARI Litchi-3. Data on growth and flowering characters of different fruit species were recorded and compiled.

Achievement/Findings:

All the plants are now in vegetative stage but flowering was observed only in guava and pineapple. In Burmese grape, average plant height was recorded 105 cm with canopy of 60 cm (N-S) and 65 cm (E-W). In guava, it was recorded 237 cm with broad canopy measured in north-south direction 157 cm and 154 cm in east-west direction. Flowering was observed in guava on mid April 2014. Growth of lemon was comparatively slower as plant height was recorded 95 cm with a smaller canopy 48 cm (N-S) and 52 cm (E-W). In pineapple, flowering was noticed on February-March 2014.
