Moulvibazar Sadar upazila is situated in the north-west part of Moulvibazar district. It lies under the AEZ no. 29 (Northern and Eastern Hills), AEZ no.22 (Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plains) and AEZ no.20 (Surma - Kusiyara Floodplain).In this upazila major land type recognized was highland comprising 11.4 % , medium highland comprising 43.5 %, medium lowland 17.8 % ,lowland 7.5 % and very lowland comprising 2.3% of the total area. Major textural class also identified was clay loam covering 55.5% , loam 20.6 %, clay 2.3 % and sandy loam 4.1% of total area. Ten soil groups were identified namely Baralekha, Sreemangal, Bijipur, Pritimpasa, Manu, Balagonj, Goyainghat, Kusiyara Phagu, Terchabari. In Northern and Eastern hill area of highland Baralekha covers major area (3.4%) ,in Northern and Eastern Piedmont Plains of medium highland Pritimpasa covers major area (2.8%), In Surma-Kusiyara Floodplain area Goyainghat soil group in medium highland covers the major area (24.7%), in medium lowland and lowland Phagu covers the major area (11.0% and 7.5% respectively),in very lowland Terchabari covers the major area (2.3%). According to local agro-ecology suitable crops identified were tea, lemon, orange, pineapple, zinger, turmeric, vegetables, rice etc. The area is most suitable for wetland crops and also for tea.Fourteen major cropping pattern namely tea, forest (Koroi, Garjan,Teak,Gamari,Rubber and others), Horticulture Crops (Pineapple/lemon/Guava/Papaya etc.), robi vegetables (Tomato/Potato/ Bitter gourd /Sweet gourd/Brinjal)- kharip vegetables(Indian spinach/Okra/ String Beans), robi vegetables (Tomato/Potato/ Bitter gourd /Sweet gourd/Brinjal)-fallow-T.aman, Fallow-B.aus-T.aman, Fallow-fallow-T.aman, Fallow-T.aman-B.aman, Boro-fallow-B.aman, Fallow-fallow-B.aman, Boro-fallow-fallow, Bush and fallow were identified.Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops is given in the guide. The guide can be used for determining flood and drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion affected area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining whether the Upazila is food deficit or surplus area.
