Multistoried Agroforestry System and Food Security in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An effective and compatible multistoried agroforestry system is one of the integrated approaches to biodiversity conservation, vertical space utilization and a fundamental basis of diversified production as well as food security. A total of twelve multistoried agroforestry systems were reviewed on the basis of their potentiality to temperature reduction, biodiversity conservation and income generation. Among them six were selected for in depth study representing the six important ecosystems of Bangladesh. These are a) Persian lilac+banana+potato-onion from flood plain ecosystem b) Aonla+carambula+lemon+potato-mungbean from terrace ecosystem c) Coconut+banana+pineapple from central ecosystem d) Jackfruit+malta+lemon+brinjal from upland ecosystem e) Mango+turmeric+aroid+yam from coastal ecosystem f) Jackfruit+banana+pineapple from hill ecosystem. Due to upper and middle storied tree canopies lower storied crops and soil experienced 0.5 to 2.5? less temperature than open field. Each unit of land accommodated three to five tree-crop combinations where several crops and cultivars were rotted year to years as a lower storied component. These production systems are being used as a source of multiple products i.e., fruits, vegetable, fuel and timber for the rural poor. Lower storied crop production hampered 10-30% as compared to open field but total production become much more higher than any other monoculture practice of the component. The net return of the multistoried system ranged from BDT 210000 to 1425861 and BCR ranges from 2.04 to 5.3, while monoculture net return and BCR ranged from BDT 102876 to 200000 and 1.6 to 2.28, respectively.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A total of twelve multistoried agroforestry systems of Bangladesh were reviewed on the basis of their potentiality to temperature reduction, biodiversity conservation and food security. Among them six were selected for in depth study representing the six important ecosystems of Bangladesh. These are a) Persian lilac+banana+potato-onion from flood plain ecosystem, existing in Hajee Danesh Science and Technology University campus, Dinajpur b) Aonla+carambula+lemon+potato-mungbean from terrace ecosystem, existing in Banghabandhu Sheik Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University campus, Gazipur c) Coconut+banana+pineapple from central ecosystem, existing in Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh d) Jackfruit+malta+lemon+brinjal from upland ecosystem, existing in Narshindhi district e) Mango+turmeric+aroid+yam from coastal ecosystem, existing in Khulna f) Jackfruit+banana+pineapple from hill ecosystem existing in Chittagong Hill Tracts. Food and Nutrition Security, Clean water and fresh air, Abundant wildlife, Sustainable family farms and ranches, Diversified production, Vertical space utilization, Climate smart agriculture, Maximum harvest of solar radiation, Aesthetic value, High income generation and Poverty alleviation in those reason these are multistored agroforestry system.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that different ecosystem of the country comprises different combination of multistoried species. But all multistoried systems proved their high productivity and income. We can use these technologies for food and nutrition security in Bangladesh. Although compatible species selection should be continued at ecosystem level.
