Field Demonstration of Check Valve of Different Regions of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment were conducted in Rangpur, Kushtia and Gazipur to demonstrate & fine tuning of check valve for priming facility of STW; to improve the fittings-fixing of PVC and plastic pipes for field operation; and to collect farmers’ feedback and identify the constraints of the check valve in the field level use. It A field day was organized to show the performance of check valve among the farmers, pump owners, DAE personnel and BRRI scientists. Besides, a survey was conducted among the different stakeholders. All of the stakeholders appreciated the development of check valve, which was a prime need to overcome priming problems and to reduce the drudgery for STW operation. It also facilitated the use of plastic pipe to conveyance the irrigation water during Boro production, which save the irrigation water and time of water application and also reduce the irrigation cost. The study indicated that check valve reduce the drudgery of farmers for starting the STW through overcoming the priming problem and also facilitate the pipe irrigation distribution system in STW areas.

Objectives:

Methodology:

For field demonstration of a check valve a study was undertaken in Rangpur, Kustia and Gazipur areas to test the performance of check valve in STW operation for overcoming the priming problem, reducing drudgery of farmers in STW operation and easiness of plastic pipe fitting of the outlet of STW. In this context, 5 check valves were installed in a STW at the above three locations (Rangpur-1, Kustia-2 and Gagipur-2)

There was more demand of check valve from the shallow tubewell owners in the experimental sites.
