Source nursery is one of the major nursery for hybrid rice parental lines development.  In this nursery exotic and locally collected advance lines were sown to make test crosses with available adaptable CMS lines for searching new maintainer and restorer lines. So, this nursery is very vital for developing  locally adaptable hybrid rice parental lines development. The more number of crosses from source nursery ensure probability to find new restorer and maintainers.

Identification of prospective maintainers and restorers of diversified genetic origin for making experimental rice hybrids.

Forty two (42) elite lines collected from conventional breeding program and 37 restorer lines along with 13 CMS lines. Parents were grown in three (3) sets with the spacing of 20 x 20cm. The CMS lines were planted in 4 seeding dates with an interval of 5 days to synchronize with the early, medium and late source nursery entries. Hand crosses were made to produce 50-150 F1 seeds from each cross.

New maintainer and restorer lines with diverse genetic background is identified from the crosses made in source nursery. In conventional breeding method, there is no other system to develop stable and locally adaptable parental lines for hybrid rice without maintaining source nursery
