Screening for Cold Tolerance of Advance Rice Genotypes at Seedling Stage During Boro 2004-05.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was carried out through cultural solution to find out the best advance breeding lines which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Among the tested rice genotypes Hbj.BIV attained significantly the highest shoot height (37.29 cm) than other tested rice genotypes. Shoot height of advance rice genotypes were varied from 11.83 to 25.35 cm. Cumulative root length of HBIV was significantly the longest (230.5 cm) than other tested rice genotypes whereas, it was 150.65 cm for BRRI dhan36. Cumulative root length of advanced rice genotypes varied from 49.7 to 201.63 cm. Most of the rice genotypes gained seedling strength of more than 3.0 mg/cm while BRRI dhan36 had about 2.5 mg/cm. The highest seedling strength was recorded in an advanced rice genotype H3798.

Objectives:

To identify advance breeding lines which can tolerate low temperature at seedling stage

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds of 36 advance breeding lines and 2 check varieties namely HB IV and BRRI dhan36 were sown on 12 January, 2005 in netted bed attached with styro-foam sheet floating in a tray containing full strength culture solution. The pH level of culture solution was maintained at 5.0 throughout the experimental period. Each entry was sown in a line and 20 seedlings in each line were maintained. Seedlings were grown up to 40 days. On February 13, 2005, data on seedling height, root length, root number, leaf number (stage), shoot dry weight and percent mortality were recorded. Seedling strength (mg/cm) was calculated using the following formulae:

Strength (mg/cm) = Shoot wt (mg)/ shoot height (cm)

The scoring system for leaf color, plant height and seedling strength are as follows:

Shoot height (cm)

>30 = 1

25-30 = 3

20-25 = 5

15-20 = 7

<15 = 9

Cumulative root length

>300 cm = 1

225-300 = 3

150-225 = 5

75-150 = 7

<75 = 9

Seedling strength (mg/cm)

>4.0 = 1

3.5-4.0 = 3

3.0-3.5 = 5

2.5-3.0 = 7

<2.5 = 9

Out of 36 18 advance breeding lines (H3798, ?BR4726-2B-6-1-J4, BR6734-11-1-2, BR6840-46-1-2, BR6618-1-2-1,BR6491-6-B-10,WAITA-4, BR6470-3-2-5, MT6, BR6460-247-1-1-2,BR6342-69-5-3,IR61355-3B-11-2-2, BR6484-21-7-3,BR6481-8-6-2,BR6619-19-12-3) had high dry matter content per unit seedling length and were selected for further study.
