Dissemination of Water Management Technologies at Farmers Field in Selected Locations of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Project activities were carried out by the Irrigation Water Management Division of BRRI, in close co-operation with DAE & local NGOs. The project activities were conducted in 4 districts named Satkhira, Kushtia, Rangpur and Kurigram. One Upazila in each district was selected for the study. A benchmark study on the existing water management and crop production practices of the area was conducted. Field demonstrations were conducted in farmers fields in each upazilla during Boro season 2007. In each locations recommended BRRI varieties were used.The activities performed in different district for dissemination of water management technologies revealed that irrigation after 3 days of disappearing standing water (alternate wetting and drying method) was the best considering yield, water requirement and from practical point of view. In this method the overall water saving was 28% over continuous ponding method and the yield reduction was only 3%. It was observed that the conveyance efficiency was 95% by adopting plastic pipe distribution system in STWs. It also reduced the irrigation time and resulted in reduced irrigation cost. It was found that about double area can be irrigated per hour by using hose pipe instead of earthen channel. Therefore, farmers were very much interested to use the plastic pipes as it saved both money and time. So, they showed their keen interest to practice the technologies from next season.

Objectives:

To demonstrate water management technologies for practical experience of the farmers and extension workers
To create awareness among the extension workers, water users and water management agencies about the developed water management technologies;
To increase the water use efficiency and crop productivity at farmers level; and
To improve livelihoods of the farmers through increased crop production and income.

Methodology:

Under the above mentioned project, steps were taken to create awareness among the farmers and extension personnel about the benefits of water management technologies through demonstration and training. Project activities were carried out by the Irrigation Water Management Division of BRRI, in close co-operation with DAE & local NGOs. The project activities were conducted in 4 districts named Satkhira, Kushtia, Rangpur and Kurigram. One Upazila in each district was selected for the study. A benchmark study on the existing water management and crop production practices of the area was conducted. Field demonstrations were conducted in farmers fields in each upazilla during Boro season 2007. In each locations recommended BRRI varieties were used. Training manual on irrigation and water management was prepared for the training of extension workers (SAAEO) and farmers. Leaflets on different water management technologies were prepared and distributed among the extension workers and farmers. A field day was also conducted in each location with participating and non-participating farmers, extension workers, NGO personnel and media people for extension of the technologies in the study areas.
