Cold injury of Boro (dry season irrigated crop) rice is a common problem for many areas in Bangladesh. We do not have cold tolerant variety both at seedling and reproductive stages till today. This study was conducted to find out the tolerance level to low temperature and to observe the performance of some breeding lines at Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Both the advance rice genotypes (IR7749-31-2-1-3-1, IR2266-42-6-2) showed cold tolerant at seedling stage and their vegetative vigor were significantly higher than standard check BRRI dhan36 and standard Boro variety BRRI dhan28. There was no significant difference between advance breeding lines in cold tolerance at seedling stage. Significantly the lowest vegetative vigor at seedling stage was observed in BRRI dhan28. All the four rice genotypes (IR7749-31-2-1-3-1, IR2266-42-6-2, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI dhan28) which were seeded in the month of October suffered badly due to cold at reproductive stage as poor panicle exertion and higher percentage of sterility. Both the advance breeding lines produced significantly higher grain yield in November seeded due to comparatively higher number of panicle per unit area and higher number of grain per panicle. Grain yield differed significantly among different rice genotypes and different sowing times. All the genotypes which were sown in October produced lower yield than sown in November. In 15 November seeding, both the advance rice genotypes  IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 and IR2266-42-6-2 yielded significantly higher yield than checks. Here, grain yield was the highest in IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 followed by IR2266-42-6-2, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36. The advance rice genotype IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 produced higher yield around 26% than BRRI dhan28 and 30% than BRRI dhan36. However, yield of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 were comparable. There was no significant yield difference among all tested rice genotypes on 10 October, 20 October and 30 October seeding. Panicles per hill differed significantly with sowing time but not with rice genotypes. It was significantly higher in October seeded plants than November seeding. Filled grains per panicles and sterility were also differed significantly among different sowing times and rice genotypes. Significantly the highest number of filled grains/ panicles and the lowest sterility were recorded on 15 November seeded plants than October seeded plants. Significantly higher filled grains per panicles were recorded in IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 than BRRI dhan36 on 15 November seeded plants. Sterility was significantly lower in IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 than checks on 20 October seeding. Grain weight was reduced significantly in October seeding due to poor grain filling. Lower filled grain/ panicle, higher percentage of sterility and reduced grain weight resulted in lower harvest index (HI) in October seeding than November. When seeds were sown in 10 October and 20 October HI was significantly higher in BRRI dhan28 than other tested genotypes. However, HI was significantly higher in IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 than BRRI dhan36 in 15 November seeding.

To study the cold tolerance  of 2 selected advance rice genotypes both at seedling and reproductive stage at natural condition.

Two advanced rice genotypes (IR7749-31-2-1-3-1, IR2266-42-6-2 previously screened) along with BRRI dhan28 (standered boro variety) and BRRI dhan36 (cold tolerant only at the early vegetative stage) were evaluated in BRRI farm Gazipur during boro 2013-14 season. There were four seeding dates from October to November (10 October, 20 October, 30 October and 15 November) 2013 so that crop suffers from cold both at seedling and reproductive stages. Thirty day old seedlings were transplanted at 20 cm x 20 cm spacing. Split plot design was used with three replications. Data on different growth parameters, yield and yield components of rice genotypes were recorded and were analyzed by using Crop Stat software.

The two advance rice genotypes namely IR7749-31-2-1-3-1 and IR2266-42-6-2 found cold tolerant at seedling stage and their vegetative vigor were significantly higher than checks BRRI dhan36 and standard Boro variety BRRI dhan28.
