Seedbed Management for Quality Rice Seedling Production in Winter

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The warmer water from the tube well had a direct impact to keep the seedbed warmer for a while. This practice satisfactorily kept the seedlings better compared to that of treatment where water was not applied. Polyethylene sheet conserved heat in day time which creates a wormer environment in seedbed to protect seedlings from cold injury during night time. Seedling height in seedbed covered with polyethylene sheet for 24-hour was highest followed by 8-hour covering with polyethylene sheet at day time and 2-4 cm standing water for 12-hour at night time treatments. Plants and roots in polyethylene sheet covered seedbeds were comparatively lean and thin than that of uncovered seedbed seedling treatments. Root length was highest in 24-hour covered seedbed with polyethylene sheet followed by 8-hour covering and 2-4 cm standing water for 12-hour at night time. The dry matter was highest in 24-hour covered seedbed with polyethylene sheet followed by 8-hour covering. Plants and roots were healthy in seedbed with 2-4 cm standing water for 12-hour at night time treatment than all other treatments in both the sets.

Objectives:

To determine the appropriate time of seedbed management and the effect of water management and polyethylene covering on rice seedlings growth

Methodology:

Sprouted seeds were seeded in paddled seedbed. The seeding time were adjusted on the basis of temperature record (low). First set of seeds were seeded on 27 December and second set on 3 January when temperatures were very low. The were 5 treatments along with a control such as

T₁= 2-4 cm standing water at day time for 12-hour

T₂= 2-4 cm standing water at day time for 8-hour

T₃=2-4 cm standing water at night time for 12-hour

T₄= Seedbed covered with polyethylene sheet for 24-hour

T₅= Seedbed covered with polyethylene sheet at day time for 8-hour and

T₆=Control (without standing water and polyethylene covering).

The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Minimum and maximum soil temperatures of seedbeds were recorded at 6, 10 and 18 hour intervals. At the end of experiment ten seedlings were randomly uprooted from each seedbed (size 1 m x 1 m). The seedling height was measured from the base to tip of the seedling. After measuring height the seedlings were washed and then measured root length. After that shoot and roots were dried in oven at 65-70 ⁰C for 72 hours and dry matters were weighted.

Achievement/Findings:

It can be concluded that maintaining 2-4 cm standing water for 12-hour at night time in seedbed is suitable for raising healthy seedling. Whereas, if water is not available or scarce, 24-hour covered seedbed with polyethylene sheet can be for mitigating such cold injury.
