Seed dormancy contributes to the adaptability of plants in nature and is of considerable importance in agriculture. Dormancy duration (period required for 80% seed germination) was estimated in twelve Boro and Aus varieties developed by Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) during 2007 and 2008 year. The rice seeds were harvested at physiological maturity, well dried and stored in drum at 18-20ºC temperature for germination test at 15 days interval. The results indicated that the variety BR3 and BRRI dhan42 had very weak dormancy, broke dormancy 30 days after maturity and recorded more than 89.75 and 87.75% germination, respectively. The strongest dormancy was observed in case of BRRI dhan27 which took 90 days to germinate. The varieties BR14, BR16, BR24, BR26, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan43 and BRRI dhan45 showed medium dormancy as it broke dormancy 45 days after harvest having 95.25, 94.75, 90.75, 88.25, 85.25, 83.50, 84.50, 93.50 and 84.25% germination, respectively.

The present investigation was taken up with twelve BRRI released Boro and Aus varieties to estimate the dormancy duration for effective utilization in crop production and future research.

The experiment was conducted at Genetic Resources and Seed Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute. Breeder seeds of the twelve Boro and Aus varieties were grown in Boro and Aus season of 2007 and 2008. At maturity, the seeds were harvested at 20-25% grain moisture content and the panicles were threshed mechanically to avoid any injury to the seeds. Freshly harvested seeds were cleaned by removal of green or not fully matured seeds. Cleaned seeds were put in paper bags and left at room temperature (25ºC) for 3 days to dry. Cleaned and graded seeds were then dried to 10-12% moisture at 30-35ºC temperature under sun for 4 days, 3-4 hours daily and stored at 18-20ºC temperature and 50-60% RH in the storage of the Breeder Seed Unit of BRRI. Seeds were used to assess dormancy duration based on germination test (ISTA, 2006). Seed dormancy determined by germination of intact seeds in 9 cm dia Petridish lined with What man No. 1 filter paper and moistened with distilled water, in a germinator maintained at 31ºC temperature and 99% relative humidity (Hall, 1996 and Ellis et at. 1983). The experiment was conducted in CRD design with 4 replications having 100 seeds per replication and the experiment was repeated at least twice. Germination counts were taken on the fifteenth day after the seeds were placed on the moist paper and germination was scored as the emergence of the radicle or coleoptile. Percentage of germination was used to evaluate the degree of dormancy. The petridishes were opened once a day to check the moisture level and to facilitate air movement. Germination test was done twice monthly to assess dormancy duration till reach 80% germination. Germination data from individual plants were used for analysis. Data were analyzed using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique and the mean differences among the treatments were adjudged with Duncan’s Multiple Range test using a computer package program MSTAT-C.

Thirty to ninety days dormancy was recorded in the tested rice varieties. Initial germination percentage of BR3 was 52.75 and it took only 30 days after harvest to break dormancy with 89.75% germination. Similarly in case of BRRI dhan42 germination was 57.50% and it took only 30 days after harvest to break dormancy with 87.75% germination. The results indicated that BR3 and BRRI dhan42 had very weak dormancy and can be grown immediately after harvest. Initial germination percentage of BRRI dhan27 was low (22.75%) and germination percentage of this variety was increased gradually and reached up to 84.25% after 90 days and indicates the strongest dormancy. On the other hand, the varieties BR14, BR16, BR24, BR26, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan36, BRRI dhan43 and BRRI dhan45 showed medium dormancy, broke dormancy 45 days after maturity and recorded 95.25, 94.75, 90.75, 88.25, 85.25, 83.50, 84.50, 93.50 and 84.25% germination, respectively. The results showed that there were variations in dormancy duration in different BRRI Boro and Aus varieties. This result however disagreed with the long duration varieties BR3 and BRRI dhan42 which took 30 days to overcome dormancy by giving 89.75 and 87.75% germination, respectively.
