Effect of Water Management and Sowing Date on Direct Wet Seeded Aman Rice Cultivation by Drum Seeder Method-2008

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur to identify appropriate sowing time for direct wet seeded, to identify the best water management practice for direct wet seeded and to compare the interaction effect of sowing time and water management practice. The experiment was carried out with 3 irrigation treatments ie. I₁= Rainfed condition, I₂= Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 15 cm below soil surface and I₃= Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 30 cm below soil surface. Four sowing dates were 16 June, 1 July, 16 July and 31 July. Land preparation water may not be required due to rainfall occurrence. Early sowing plant gave better yield if there is no climatic hazard. In delayed condition, 31^st July sowing gave the highest yield with 2 supplemental irrigation. The minimum water productivity was found from 1^st July sowing plant due to disturbance of climatic hazard at grain filling stage. The highest water productivity obtained from 31st July sowing with two supplemental irrigation.

Objectives:

To identify appropriate sowing time for direct wet seeded Aman rice cultivation;
To identify the best water management practice for direct wet seeded Aman rice cultivation; and
To compare the interaction effect of sowing time and water management practice.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with 3 irrigation treatments ie. I₁= Rainfed condition, I₂= Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 15 cm below soil surface and I₃= Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 30 cm below soil surface. Four sowing dates were 16 June, 1 July, 16 July and 31 July. The experiment was conducted at the research field of BRRI farm, Gazipur during the Aman season of 2007. The rice cultivars were used as BRRI dhan39. This experiment was carried out with three irrigation treatments and four sowing dates. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications having unit plot size of 2.5m × 4.5m. Sowing dates were in main plot and water management treatments were in sub plot. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 135-50-60-35-5 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc sulfate, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Yield and yield contributing factors of BRRI dhan39 are showed that the highest plant height (105.6 cm) was observed in mid July sowing plant and it was followed by 31^st July sowing plant. The highest number of panicle per m² area observed 320. It is varied from 237 to 320. Mid June sowing (S₁) gave the highest no. of effective tiller/m² and it was statistically identical by 1^st July sowing. Filled grain per panicle was higher in mid June sowing (S₁) and it was statistically identical with mid July sowing. It varied from 65 to 125. Grain sterility in percentage is lowest in 16th July sowing (S₃). It is observed that grain sterility (%) effected by sowing date but not by water treatment. Grain yield was statistically significant different by sowing date. The highest grain yield was obtained from mid July sowing. It was statistically significant different by water management. Two supplemental irrigation applied gave the highest yield during this year.The interaction effect of sowing date and water management during the year are statistically significant different on effective tiller /m², filled grain per panicle, sterility percentage and yield. The highest effective tillers per m² (324) was found 16^th June sowing with no irrigation. Maximum filled grain per panicle (131) was obtained from 16th June sowing with no supplemental irrigation. Minimum sterility % (20%) recorded from 16^th July sowing with one supplemental irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface in PVC tube. Highest grain yield (4.77 t/ha) was obtained from 16th July sowing with 1 supplemental irrigation (S₃I₂). The minimum water productivity was found from 1^st July sowing plant due to disturbance of climatic hazard at grain filling stage. The highest water productivity obtained from 31st July sowing with two supplemental irrigation (S₃I₃).
