Effect of Water Management and Sowing Date on Direct Wet Seeded Boro Rice Cultivation by Drum Seeder Method 2008

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur to identify appropriate sowing time for direct wet seeded Boro rice cultivation, to identify the best water management practice for direct wet seeded Boro rice cultivation; and to compare the interaction effect of sowing time and water management practice. Irrigation treatments were, I₁= Continuous standing water (2-7cm), I₂ = Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 15 cm below soil surface and I₃ = Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 30 cm below soil surface. Four sowing dates were, S₁= 1st Dec, S₂=16th Dec, S₃=1st Jan and S₄=16th Jan. In Boro season January 16 sowing with irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface in perforated PVC pipe reduced irrigation water and maintained favorable environment for getting maximum grain yield and water productivity.

Objectives:

To identify appropriate sowing time for direct wet seeded Boro rice cultivation;
To identify the best water management practice for direct wet seeded Boro rice cultivation; and
To compare the interaction effect of sowing time and water management practice.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the research field of BRRI farm, Gazipur during the Boro season, 2007-08. The rice cultivars were used as BRRI dhan28. This experiment was also carried out with three irrigation treatments and four sowing dates. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications having unit plot size of 2.5m × 4.5m. Sowing dates were in main plot and water management treatments were in sub plot. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 220-120-85-60-10 kg/ha of urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc sulfate, respectively. Except urea all fertilizers were applied during the final land preparation. Urea was applied in four equal splits at 25, 40, 55 and 65 days after sowing (DAS). Irrigation water applied, rainfall data S&P rate was measured as per same as Aman season. BRRI dhan28 was harvested on 8^th October, 28 October, 5^th November and 15^th November, respectively. Irrigation treatments were, I₁= Continuous standing water (2-7cm), I₂ = Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 15 cm below soil surface and I₃ = Irrigation (5-7cm) when water level is 30 cm below soil surface. Four sowing dates were, S₁= 1st Dec, S₂=16th Dec, S₃=1st Jan and S₄=16th Jan.

Achievement/Findings:

Statistically significant different by sowing date were observed on tiller/m², effective tiller per m²_,filled grain per panicle and grain yield. The highest number of tiller per m² (452) and. the highest number of effective tiller per m² (430) was found in 16^th January sowing (S₄). Filled grain per panicle was highest in 16^th December sowing (S₂). Sterility in percentage was not statistically significant different by sowing date. The highest grain yield (4.56 t/ha) was found from 16^th January sowing (S₄). In case of water treatment, only grain yield was statistically significant different. The highest grain yield (4.64 t/ha) was found in irrigation treatment (I₂). But, it was statistically identical with the treatment I₃. The highest effective tiller per m² was 444 in 31st December sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 30 cm below the ground surface in PVC pipe (S₄I₃). The highest number of filled grain per panicle (90) was observed in the interaction effect of 16th December sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface in PVC pipe (S₂I₂). Minimum sterility (%) was found in 1st December sowing and water treatment was saturation (S₁I₃). The highest grain yield was 4.97 t/ha found from 16th January sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 15 cm below the ground surface in PVC pipe (S₄I₂) The lowest yield (3.67 t/ha) was observed in 31st December sowing and water treatment was irrigation when water is 30 cm below the ground surface in PVC pipe (S₃I₃).
